| I have an 01 Volusia 800, Its got a set of Vanc and Hines pipes, and a Dynojet needle/jet pack in the carb... Right now, it refuses to Idle with the choke off, and it sputters when you have very little throttle. an example of this would be if I were to be going 50MPH in 5th gear, the bike sputters slightly (you feel a pulse in the power), if I accelerate to 55, the bike stops sputtering. Now obviously these problems stem from the carb not being setup properly, but sadly I have very little experiance in dealing with carbs. So can any one point me in the right direction for tuning the bike, or is this something better left to a mechanic? Thanks! |

| You can do it yourself. First, I'd contact Dynojet. Did they give you some baseline settings for the mixture screws? Do they offer different jet sizes for different elevations? Your carbs have three circuits in them, and along with the fuel screw, you'll want to adjust the pilot jet size if you went too large. The specific sizes and screw settings are not in my head, so you'll need to contact them. Chances are someone else here knows this stuff. In the meantime, here's a good tutorial.

| So now I'm just fustrated. Cleaned the carb and jets, so now it doesnt sputter at low throttle, but it absolutly does not want to idle at all with out at least one click on the choke. So what am I doing wrong? what could I have over looked? |

| Did you get the baseline settings? It's all pointless unless you have a place to start.

| The thing is I can get it to idle almost perfectly (the proper RPM's) with one notch on the choke. So I'm thinking that I may have the Idle adjusted horribly low, so that when I turn the choke off it instantly dies. Tonight I'm going to turn up the idle adjustment and see If that helps |

| Woo! got the thing to idle with out the choke on, but it doesnt idle smoothly... it fluctuates between an idle and stoping, but it catches its self and keeps idleing. possibly a miss adjusted float? Last edited by Spencer_LV; 03-15-2006 at 01:54 AM. |

| Check your air fuel screws and make sure they are at least 3 turns out. With the V&H pipes, you may need up to an additional 1/2 to 3/4 turn out. Also make sure your floats are set to 7.0 MM. If you have to adjust the air fuel screws out more, do it a little at a time, I would recommend about 1/8 turn and then run it a bit and see if it gets better or worse. Low speed it usually affected most by the following: Air/fuel screws Pilot Jets needles So it your upper and mid range are good, then this is where you will need to look.
