Unhappy Guages going crazy?

Ok guys, I need help. Every now and then my guages will go from minimum possible to max and flucuate horribly, and backfire. My gas light comes on as well. I just replaced the starter relay and believe some wiring around it to be the problem. Help!

All yours gauges? Speedo, tach, and all the light or just the low gas one?

It has been a while since I rode her, so im thinking from memory that it was all the lights, the nuetral light, gas light, not the turn signals or the oil temp though.

Loose/corroded battery connections. Or, worn out battery.

Have you added any extra lights that did not come with the bike as standard equipment?

These can cause similar effects if wirred up to the wrong location or maybe a loose connection.

no, No lights have been added. The battery is brand new. connections seem tight. I am still thinking it might have something to do with that ignition relay I had to replace. Anyone have any other hints? I will start looking at it next week and probably will also repaint it over the winter too.
