It all started when I upgraded the air cleaners from stock to K&N aftermarket high flow units on my 1998 Marauder. The bike already has a DynoJet Stage I kit and Super Trapp headers, and I read somewhere that the K&N filters would further increase performance. When I was putting things back together, a gas leak sprang from a small cut in the fuel pump hose. I took the expedient route and replaced it with some standard 3/4" automotive fuel hose, cut to a longer length because the tight curves of the stock hose weren't built into it. The bike started and idled OK, but when I put a load on it while test driving, it began to spit and sputter, lose power and regain it in surges. To my mind it was suffering a classic fuel delivery problem, like having water in the gas. I parked it and ordered the correct hose, thinking that by modifying that hose I had affected the fuel pressure, pissing off some on-board computer chip. The hose eventuall arrived and I installed it. The test drive produced the same problem as before. The air filters came with some donut shaped air restrictors. I put those in and they resulted in no change. Resetting the idle mixture screws, from 3 full turns to 2 1/4 turns (set by the last mechanic to tune it) changed nothing. I'm now thinking of putting back the stock air filters, but god I hate removing the tank on that bike, and since I just found and joined this forum, I thought I'd pose this mystery to a group who may come up with some answers. Thanks ahead of time for any suggestions. |
