Default Removing Oil Pan

I have a 1982 Suzuki GS300L and after trying to change the oil, I stripped the threads on the oil pan. My mechanic has tried putting a bigger plug in a few times, but the bike is still leaking. He wants me to bring it back in so he can take off the oil pan, clean it out, and work on it from there. He said that the exhaust will have to be dropped to take out the oil pan, but I didn't think that was necessary. Am I wrong? I'll admit that I'm no mechanic, but even if the exhaust does need to be dropped, is it something I can do myself to save some cash? Any tips also? Thanks a lot.
