I was at the yamaha-motorcycles.org and they brought me here. But I have a Yamaha XJ 650 1982. There is this problem with the starter. when I go to start it, it truns over a few times them it like slips out. All you hear is what sounds like grinding gears. My though was the starter clutch was bad. Since then I have taken the engine apart, cracked the case in half and taken out the starter drive system. The idler gear and the gear it drives (on the starter clutch) both show sings of being worn ( The coppery color is showing through). I find it highly unlikely that these are the gear sliping. next in line is the starter clutch. I took it apart and it is flawless no singns of sliping, jaming or scoring. the last part of the system is the chain that connects to the crank shaft the chain is loose and shows some signs that is could be skipping. the chain is loose it has a good 3/4 to 1/2 inch of slack. I think it doesnt seem likely that this is what is skipping because when the starter skips it is skipping very fast, because the starter is truning at full speed and the engine is now turning fast at all. So if it's my chain I checked and their is no tensioner would I have to buy a new chain. |
