Default Katana Oil Pressure

I have an 88 Katana 600GSX that I am restoring. I am having a problem with the oil blowing out through the oil filter gasket upon start and running for a few seconds. Could the oil pump pressure valve be bad?

Thanks for your help. Robert

It could be but, I would first ask what brand filter you are using?
Also check to be sure it's not accidentally double gasketed.By this I mean leaving the rubber gasket from the old filter dried and stuck to the mating surface.
I have also seen batches of OEM filters that had a manufactured defect that cuased this. If you are useing the Suzuki filter then try one from a different dealer if possible. This happened to me about 10 years ago. Had a whole case of bad filters and you couldn't tell anything was wrong with them until you fitted them and they blew out the seal.
