Unhappy Sitting for 4 years

I recently got a 2000 suzuki 650 that has been sitting for 4 years. I bought a new battery 1st. The gas tank was extremely gummed up so I cleaned it out. There are these two valves, one on the tank and one on the frame that fuel runs through that are vaccuum controled with lines leading to the carb. I took these apart to find them clean. After replacing the tank and connecting everything, I checked the plugs, looked good. So I start it.

Immediatley, the carb overflow began to leak gas. I take the carbs off to find one float stuck. I clean the carbs with carb cleaner, put everything back together and start the bike again. It idles fine.

My problem is this, I cant rev the bike past 1500 rpm's unless i let it idle for a few minutes. I am then able to rev it for a second before it starts to act like its starving for fuel.

This is really getting to me. Anyone with any idea what I should do next, I would really appreciate a response or an email to Invisiblerogue@aol.com

Thx guys.

Edit: I was told the type of motor is called a V-Twin

A carb is a carb but is your model an SV650? I'm not a carb specialist so I'll let the other members share ideas.

I had a similar problem with my bike the first time I ran it on the reserve after it had sat for a while. For me the fuel filter was on the intake inside the tank so I pulled the tank and pulled the filters and cleaned them. I also pulled the fuel lines from the tank->petcock->fuel pump and cleaned them out. Once I put it back together and tried firing it up a few times the problem went away. I think a clogged fuel filter was starving the engine for fuel and resulting in the problem you are seeing.

You might have varnish in the jets yet. Try a dose of Seafoam in the gas and a long ride. If that doesn't help, you might have to pull the carbs apart and scrub 'em.

You say the inside of the tank was dirty and you cleaned it, you might have some dirt clogging the fuel line, that could starve the engine for fuel, maybe try disconnecting the fuel line and use air to blow through the line back into the tank, if you don't have a compresser a can of compressed air should work.
Good luck!
Peter

Right on guys, TY. I am headed out to try this stuff now. I'm just gonna pull the carbs out and scrub um just to be sure. I will let you know what happens. Thank you again.

He e-mailed me so I guess I can answer that, it ran good for a short time after he blew air back through the fuel line, but the dirt in the take clogged the outlet and the fuel flow was restricted again, it's most likely the bike sat for a long time with an empty tank and rusted up. A stored bike should always be left full to prevent condensation from forming and adding a fuel stabilizer is a good idea too.
Does anybody have an idea on how to clean and seal a rusted tank? I've seen products available but have never had to use them.

I cleaned and coated a tank once, using a product called Kream. It came with two different chemicals. One was some sort of acid that removed the rust and etched the inside. The other was the actual coating. It worked great and wasn't that hard to do.
