Default Burning oil after fall

My M50 fell over the other day with the motor running. I started it up this morning and there was white smoke coming from the exhaust. After looking around there was oil dripping from the bottom of the lower pipe. I rode around the block and it hadn't stopped. How much damage do you think I caused?

Pulled off the road like a dummy and put the kick stand down in soft grass.

Putting kick stand down alone should have killed the engine.

I don't really think anyone but your dealer or mechanic can answer your question.

Mate, a bit of oil goes a long way but as long as you make sure your oil level is topped up the excess in your exhaust should clear up eventually, and look at the bright side, you now have a bit more rust protection in em but if in doubt, have it checked out.

Did it fall on the right or left side (as you are sitting on the bike)?

Pull your air filter and see if any oil made it up to there, if so wipe it out good and give it some time to burn off what is in the hoses. Oil may have come up the breather hose.

Yes I think this is what may have happened. It finially stopped smoking after a few long runs. I did an oil change and the level is holding steady. Everything is doing great for now. Thanks for the advice.

You may want to look at the air filter anyway just to be sure. If it got soaked in oil it could be making the bike run too lean which would not be good long term.

Well actually that would be making it run rich, more fuel and less air ( less air if the filter is full of oil ) would be rich, removing the air filter would make it run lean.

Hang on... is that standard, or is it just on the M50?

I've spent a good deal of time 4-wheeling and staffing rockcrawling events, so we see a lot of Jeeps/rock buggies get rolled onto their sides, roofs even (and the occasional barrel roll all the way back onto the wheels.) What generally happens is that the oil makes it's way up into the top area of the engine (exhaust valves and such) where it doesn't normally get, so when the rig gets back on it's wheels and gets started back up, the white smoke cometh. And cometh for a while until it all burns off. I suspect the same is true for bikes, just on a smaller scale! Like what was said above: just check the oil, add as needed, and you should be OK.
