true enough, but nearly half your bill is personalized plates.

don't want to know if jim was in charge what personalized plates would cost.

Actually, that was the case until 1999 when Tim Eyman's I-695 was passed. I-695 repealed the value-based motor vehicle excise tax and replaced it with a flat $30 fee for tabs.

Of course, I-695 was ruled unconstitutional by the courts, but the legislature revised the laws to keep vehicle tabs at $30 and had another initiative in 2002, I-776, which passed and confirmed that the voters wanted $30 tabs.

Here is the current WA state law (RCW 46.16.0621) on it:
RCW 46.16.0621: License fee.

This however has has not kept the DOL from adding on other bull%%%% fees. There is a weight-based fee:
* 0–4,000 lbs: $10
* 4,001–6,000 lbs: $20
* 6,001–8,000 lbs: $30

Then depending on where you live, there are other fees imposed by the localities. Like if you live in the "Regional Transit Authority" areas in King, Pierce, or Snohomish counties you have to pay 0.3% of the depreciated MSRP of the vehicle every year.

Then this year they tacked on the $5 parks fee that you can opt-out of, but you specifically need to do that.

You can actually go to the DOL website and put in your plates and name and it will tell you what your renewal fees for the next year will be.
https://fortress.wa.gov/dol/tabs/FeeCalcVehicle.aspx

Here are mine coming up in April:
Quote:
It will cost $110.75 to renew your tabs.
You may print this page for your records.
Fees
Filing fee - Funds go to the county in which the fee is paid. $3.00
License fee - Funds construction and maintenance projects. $30.00
Weight base fee - Funds highway improvements, transit and other transportation needs. $10.00
License service fee - Supports the computer system used to provide licensing services. $0.75
Personalized license plate fee - Fee charged to renew personalized license plates and used to fund the Department of Fish and Wildlife. $30.00
Specialty plate fee - Fee charged to renew plates with a special background design and used to support the plate's organization. $30.00
Wildlife rehabilitation fee - Funds the Wildlife Rehabilitation Program managed by the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife $2.00
State Parks Account donation - Supports Washington State Parks $5.00

I still like the value based one, anything over 5 grand, sock it to'em.

heck Milwaukee was (i think they passed it, not sure) working on a "wheel tax" of something like $2/tire.

Now that I think about it, they didn't get that through.

Thanks for the clarification muggins. When faced with a loss in revenue, the state always seems to find a way to add fees to make up for it. Such as mandatory license plate updates with reflectivity fees even if your current plate is legible and reflective. Seems wasteful to me.

I try not to get too worked up about the details. As long as it doesn't seem exorbitant I'll pay what I have to to ride legally.

i lied. i just got the bill today. $25. in north dakota they are good for 1 year. and that year is jan-dec. if you buy a bike in july or some other month you get a pro-rated rate for the 1st year.

bike tags in wisconsin make sense, a lot of sense, every other (even year, they are ALL due).

I need to write my congressman and tell him even year vehicles get renewed in even years, and odd year cars likewise (two year vehicle tags).

but I doubt it will get anywhere.

Having a reflective plate and being required to have a light on the plate just does not make sense.

$18.00 here in PA for the bikes. Cars are $36 a year and 1/2 ton trucks are $58.50 a year.

that's one thing I like about WI - all bike plates are due in even years, prorated, of course.

would like to see our cars done the same way.
