Default Low RPM Engine "Ticking"

I just got my bike back from my 7,500mi maintenance last week, and since then there as been a strange sound coming from what seems like the left side of the engine.

At low RPM, mostly I hear it starting out in first, or slightly revving the engine in nuetral, there is a distinctive fast paced "tick" sound, like the sound of a playing card in spokes when you were a kid. Could this at all be related to my valves being checked and something not done right? Is there always this slight tick sound and i'm just now noticing it?

Any ideas would be helpful here. Like I said, sounds like its coming from the left side of the engine block, but could be coming from the black box deal near the left footpeg (sorry, I don't even know what that component is).
