I own a ford freestyle with the CVT tranny. If you're not familiar it's a shiftless trans much like a snowmobile...ford used it in SEVERAL vehicles from 2005 to 2008. This trans has a 'reputation' on the internet of catastrophic failures at an alarming rate with relatively few miles (75-90,000). I should also mention the replacement cost of this trans is an honest to god $9000.00. Now I purchased this vehicle with the intentions of keeping it...it's a dream on the road but the warranty is going to be over in 2-1/2 years and I'll be at 60,000miles then....what will I do? I'll tell ya what, I'll keep it, take the chance and continue to drive a great vehicle without the payments. Replacing a vehicle for possible problems is going to cost $$ no matter how you look at it...and in the end the new owner of your bike/car/truck could end up driving it for another LONG time without failure. You can't predict the future...you can only make the decision that's best for you. Worst part of rebuild is the bill..I know that, but trade in on another used bike, even with a good reputation doesn't mean it won't fail either. Buying new will definately cost plenty...either way you're going to be spending money one way or another unless you go bikeless. As I've stated before, I'll enjoy my time...listen closely once in a while but she's staying put untill I grow bored or really want more bike. Right now she's on the lift waiting on John for a 2-1/2 drop..bolts are loose, covers are off...she's gonna be family for a good long while

Not being a mechanical engineer or designer leaves me with trusting the manufacturer to do the right thing. I am sure Suzuki builds these bikes to a standard of reliability that was unheard of even 20 years ago. With liquid cooling, fuel injection and really smart little computers and processors we have basically trouble free 2 wheeled transportation. Just follow the maintenance schedule and ride within reason. Don't expect the bike to pull like a V-Max, don't expect it to handle like a sports bike either. It is a cruiser, ride according to it's design and capabilities. Ride it within it's intended use parameters. As for the folks going on about carbon build up I have to shake my head a bit. Clean running unmodified FI engines with modern oils and unleaded gas make this almost a non-issue. The 50 series may not be the cream of the crop in the moto-world but are by far a darn good buy and miles ahead of a lot of other 2 wheeled critters out there. |
