It seems to me the only way you will ever save money with a bike is to totally ditch any of your 4-wheel vehicles and ride the bike only. The insurance on my bike is actually more than it is on my truck! The extra insurance partly negates any fuel savings. Maybe it where I am a new rider but I am paying $339 a year to insure my 2006 M50 while my 2002 chevy runs me $298 a year. The plus side is that I am having a whole lot more fun riding these twisty mountain roads on the TN/NC border than I'll ever have in my long wheel base truck!

I thought we rode motorcycles because they were fun, not becuase it would save us a couple hundred dollars a year! LMAO!

Motorcycle tires are expensive.
Motorcycle oil changes are expensive.
Motorcycle gear is expensive.
Motorcycle customizing is expensive.
Motorcycle repairs are expensive.

About the only thing cheap on a bike is the good fuel economy. Who cares. It doesn't stop any of us from riding as much as possible.

Whether you get 45, 55 or 60mpg it's all better than any cage.

That's super cheap. My bike is $290 a year now, but last year it was $600 something. I finished paying it off last year so I'm thinking that's why the rate dropped so far?

Anyway back to the mileage thing, has anyone taken mileage with and without a passenger? I'm curious on the difference.

I have several times. I usually ride 2up but the difference for solo for me is around 4mpg difference.

My bike ins. is about $100 a year cheaper than my truck. That's with full coverage on the bike and liability on the truck. As for gas savings, mine is extreme....over the time I've had the bike (1 3/4 years) I've averaged out to 48.5 mpg, the truck gets 14 mpg or so average. With my 64mi commute daily to and from work, the savings is very nice.

My riding is quite mixed between 2-up and solo, most times I don't run through one tank of gas only solo or only 2-up, so I've never really compared the mileage difference. If I get a chance, I'll see what the difference is, but I really don't ride that much differently 2-up as opposed to solo.

last time i filled my bikes tank i put in less than 2 gallons and calculated the mileage at 135 devided by 2 gallons = 67.5 mpg with only one rider, my wife has her own bike.

Gee now I don't feel so bad about my lower than average gas mileage... I pay $98 a year , full coverage insurance.

I'm going to check around for better rates soon. I nearly had a heart attack when my insurance company told me how high the rate was. My truck is under full coverage as well as the bike. They said the rate was higher because I've been licensed less than a year and that bikes are higer to fix and are usually just considered salvage when wrecked. Who knows if this is true. I have state farm and have been happy with their rates for our 3 vehicles and house.

I pretty consistently get between 57 and 61 mph. I mostly drive a leisurely 55-60 mph on country roads and do some, but very little city driving. The mileage improved by 1 or 2 mpg when I added a windshield a couple years ago. Obviously, I crack the throttle every now and then for fun.
