Tachs are a nice addition to any bike that doesn't have one but seriously, how many people ride around looking at the tach to see when to shift? My bike has a large factory analog tach above the digital speedometer and I never use it. It could stop working and I wouldn't miss it. Don't M50's have rev limiters? If so, you don't need the tach to help you prevent over-revving.

Well, I too would like to have a tach, but I really don't understand, where people have got that impression, that it would be used to see when to shift?

I know when to shift, I don't need to use it for that. From tach I would like to get to know the engine a bit better, what is the revs when motor is having the best torque, how does changing parts effect to the torque, and so on.

I can do (and have done) well without it, but it would be, like someone already said here, a nice and educational addition to the bike. It could be a cool-looking addition too, if you find one that pleases your eye

So far I have only heard about lots of problems (like jumpy needle) people have had installing tachometer to C50/M50. Someone claimed, that the reason is the (not only one, but) multiple sparks the chip sends to ignition coils. Someone claimed, that some meters are just too sensitive to a shaking handlebar, who knows, but it would be nice to hear, what are the tachometers, that _actually_ work on M50. Already bought one that I had to return.

So, please, there is no information for anyone, that someone can do without tach, and thinks it's unnecessary. That's not the point, right

I prefer the seat of the pants approach to shifting myself, but like to have an accurate (read not a cheapy) tach on the bike anyways. It is handy for carb and idle adjustments, plus they look cool- like you take performance seriously. If you drag race they are a must, but around town I never look at it.

My '69 Sportster chopper had a tach but no speedo, so RPM was the only way I could guage my speed LOL!

You guys sound like the hot rodders did back in the 60's What good is a four speed it will take you longer to shift than a three speed. Guess they were wrong huh! I'm impressed with all the tuned ears. Nobody has a clue what their engine is doing or what rpm it's turning by lisening to it. If you want to be consistant and shift at the right RPM to get you the fastest from A to B you need a tach. If you don't care you don't need one.

I would like to have a tach just to know what my RPMs are from time to time. Have been looking at this setup for a year now. Reasonable price relative to what's out there and all the possible features.

I don't see how having a tach is going to inform you of any changes in torque or at what rpm it has the most torque. You're gonna need a dyno to do that. But hey, if you wanna know how fast the engine's turning, go for it. Plenty of room on the bars to clamp all sorts of stuff. IMO, the Vapor gauge would be your best bet.

My thought was to replace the stock speedo unit with the Vapor.

Definitely. I've seen a few naked SV's with the Vapor gauge and the look sweet. Small enough you can mount 'em just about anywhere.

It looks like you set it up with the sensors that you wish to use. Don't know that they have a sensor to measure boost but don't quote me. Check the site. You can download the manuals for all of the items.

They also have a 'dashboard' type holder for it that has more indicator lights on it. The thing looks really versatile.

I am in the process of installing a analog tachometer on my M50. I have the tank off and am starting to hook up the wires. Both coils have a orange and white wire connected to them. The other wire on the coils are black and yellow and white. From the electrical drawing it is hard to determine which wire is the negative coil lead. My gut feel says the orange and white is the positive lead. Which wires do I connect to? I do not want to have to do this twice. I already have the resistor/diode bridge made to convert to dual fire. Any help would be great.

Thank You. Now since the M50 is single fire I am going to need to connect to both coils and use the diode/resistor bridge to convert the dual fire tachometer to single fire.

Thanks

I'd like to see that when you get it done, Roger. Also contemplating the DJ final drive.

The tach is all mounted and wired to the coils. Now all I need are (2) spade connectors to hook power the the tach and I will see how it works. I made up my own mounting brackets and I think that it is a clean looking mount. I am left eye dominant so I mounted it on the left side of the speedometer. I made all of the tachometer connections in the headlight. I am interested in seeing what RPMs the bike is turning on the freeway.
Matt, we need to get together sometime and compare bike mods. As for the DJ drive, if it were me I would not do it. In early June I went on a 1000 mike 4 day ride thru southern Ohio and route 16 thu West Virginia. The M50 performed GREAT. Yes, the bike has some buzz at freeway speeds but the low end is very good for back roads. Just my 2 cents.
