Well the pipes are done-ish. I thought the semi gloss pipes would blend in well with the rest of the semi gloss black on the bike so I didn’t wrap them but I found out that rustolium grill paint doesn’t stick for crap. I even wore latex gloves to keep the oils off while I washed them, sanded them, wiped them down, and during each of the 4 light coat applications. So unless someone can vouch otherwise, rustolium sucks on steel surfaces. If you look closely you can see anywhere the wrench or my wedding band touched during the reinstall. So needless to say I will eventually pull them back of and strip and refinish em later.

Other than that I am very happy with how they cam out and the performance/aesthetic gains my M has made.
Thanks again to everyone for their input and assistance regarding this project and feel free to shoot me any questions or further suggestions you may have.

This is the paint I used...

Remember that bike is not rideable with no wrap or heat shield.

They look great!!

Also how come noone has recommended a jet-hot coating? I know you can get it in a chrome look but they may even have a black. That coating is supposed to reduce temperatures quite a bit and you may not even have to wrap them at that point.

The only downside is the coating is probably around $100 or more. But it's what we use to coat headers and turbine housings on race cars and keep the heat in the pipes and not in the engine bay.

There a lot of different brands of these coatings but one like this will work

http://www.jet-hot.com/

Header Powder Coating - Thermal Coating for Exhaust - Thermal Engine Coatings - Piston Dry Film Lubricant - Motorcycle Ceramic Coatings Exhaust

This is taken from Jet-Hots site:

STERLING SILVER is our brightest looking finish. It comes out looking like a very highly polished aluminum. This coating can withstand temperatures up to 1,300ºF and will reduce skin temps on pipes by about 300ºF. It is a very low maintenance finish, easily cleaned with soap and water. You can use any non-abrasive aluminum polish to bring out the shine if it ever gets dirty. It will never turn blue or gold like chrome or stainless. This coating works great on normally aspirated engines and any parts that need to have a show quality finish.

I would look at having the shop cut in half a larger diameter pipe that you can use as a heat shield. Tack weld a nut to the pipes, drill holes in the heat shield and bolt them on.

By the time you know you have touched those pipes, you will have 3rd degree burns.

Thanks, I appreciate the info but it looks like more than I’m wanting to spend. I already kinda went over budget so I’m probably just going to end up doing something I can do myself. I actually hear powder coating is really cheap, it’s the prep work involved that’s time consuming and expensive. It seems I have perked others interest so if anyone wants to make these pipes and go with a different finish I would love to see how they come out. Especially that polished aluminum heat blocking for the chrome junkies. I bet that would come out nice

Yeah, your absolutely right. They don’t get as hot as I thought they would but I went on a 2 hour ride last night and when I got off my jeans were kinda burned. Not visibly, but they felt rough and I could see meted fibers on the pipe. So I like your idea for the heat shield. It was in the low 40’s last night so that may have helped keep the heat from getting outa control.

I recommended that back on the first page.

I was searching for heat shields, and there are all types of options.

Another option I wanted to throw out there was that when I was on Summit's website they sell the 2" steel J-bends for $15 a piece.

But...

They also sell stainless J-bends for only $21 a piece, and Rocky you said you only used three of these right? So not too bad for only $63 in metal to have a stainless exhaust that should last a good while. Here a link:

Summit SUM-621005 - Summit® Exhaust Tubing Mandrel Bends - summitracing.com
Steel

Dynomax Performance 42426 - Dynomax Mandrel-Bent Elbows - summitracing.com
Stainless

Yeah, i was trying to do the project on a budget and if i would have known it would get as pricey as it did when i started i would have definitely paid the extra ~20 bucks for the greatly superior metal... Great point

I didn’t like the instructions for how to make my pipes being at the bottom of the page so I moved them to post #81 on the top of page 5. (next page)

Trigger’s question is now in reference to post #81 and is answered at the bottom of the same post. Thanks all for dealing with my OCD.

Silly girl, you can't weld with a cutting torch
Thanks. I take it the J Bends were un-bent to get the right shape? I ask because I'm my welder. And Thanks much.

Diamond Jim, I make a motion to have this added to the sticky.

You want to cut and weld to get the curve you need. Also check into rings that help weld these joints together. I know Hooker makes them.
