Thanks; your pipes among others were the inspiration for going custom. I haven’t done any highway riding with the new pipes yet but I have gotten up to 85 and haven’t had any issues. It seems our setup is identical aside from the intake. The only draw back I have noticed to the larger/louder pipes is the M’s high running rpms are of course much more noticeable. I really wish I had jumped on the dj-drive when I had the chance.

I have heard you can hear the air sucking into the engine with the naked jugs mod. Since putting your pipes on is that sound more pronounced? My thought is that when your running at those high rpms on the highway you may not be getting enough airflow.

damn it, I have got to tear into this bit*h and find out why it won't cruise highway speeds at lower rpms. Might be the intake, I guess I'll have to hook up an A/F meter soon. maybe to much air, making it lean out, which would cause the problem too. I couldn't wait for the mandrel bent pipe to ship in, but after looking at how clean yours turned out I wish I had the patientice to wait. But after wrapping the pipes you cant' tell the crimped bends.

With "to much exhaust flow" the engine cant produce enough back pressure to run proper at higher RPMs.
If you go bigger then stock pipes, you're going to lose back pressure, and lose top end speed!
It will run better out of the gates, but worse on top.
Mine are 1.5 inch.

flip around?
no...to much flow/not enough back pressure = no top end.

Do you need a tach to manually create your own map? I wouldnt even know where to start looking at all those numbers

It's important to separate backpressure from gas velocity when talking about exhaust design. Sometimes adding/subtracting one will effect a change in the other, but they are separate factors and should be treated as such. Backpressure (i.e. restriction in flow) is bad. High gas velocity is good. Ideally, we want the lowest amount of backpressure possible with the highest gas velocity possible. The best performing exhaust will have the best possible blend of high exhaust gas velocity (for cylinder scavenging) and low backpressure. I believe the problem of low power at higher rpms stem from a restrictive intake. When the engine is having to work to bring in air it lowers the overall gas velocity through the entire system thus reducing the effectiveness of the engine to create power. Just my 2 cents though

I have been in the process of coming up with a design, but I keep getting side tracked with other projects. I was thinking about fabbing some type of simple baffle or the fibro-sleeve.

Has anyone tried welding some small nuts on the pipes that you could bolt on a cheap heatshield ? I can't imagine not wrapping the pipes, but I think a heatshield, at least over portions of the pipes would look pretty good.

Btw, they look really good.

I don’t know if this is the best way of baking the paint on but the wife said no to using the oven so here I am… This project is getting more and more redneck everyday.

Pipes are just about finished, I’ll have a final pic soon enough

Any ideas on how to seal the heat wrap once it’s on? I’ve heard it stores moisture and then kinda disintegrates over time. I saw some silicone spray for like $50, but that’s not really my speed. You think a couple coats of paint should do it?

Thanks for all the help and input along the way, your advice has been huge. Also, thanks for all the complements.

There are coatings for much less than $50: eBay Motors: DEI HT Silicone Coating Black Exhaust Header Wrap Spray (item 370136943999 end time Jan-27-09 13:38:42 PST)

I have never used it, so I can't say how it looks. By the way, I really dig the way you "baked" your pipes.

This of course means more labor translating into higher cost.

So my cheap knock offs have turned into…

J-bends- $70
Labor- $150
Paint- $15
25’ wrap- $30
= $265

So as long as nothing else comes up I will get an exhaust that I don’t know if it will sound good or not, with an unprofessional finish, and made of anodized steel for a little better than half price. It’s been a good learning experience and ill update as things progress.
What is anodized steel? I know its used in Aluminum to prevent further corrosion, but the anodizing process is actually a controlled "rust" if you will of the Aluminum, covering the piece in Aluminum Oxide and protecting it from further corrosion. Right? How is that done with steel?

My bad... I meant aluminized steel. I recently took up salt water fishing and have been looking at anodized aluminum reels.

Yeah, I thought about getting a few together to distribute to the fellas for a little coin but there are a few factors that pose a problem.

1. I used the flanges from the stock pipes
2. Materials alone were $95 not counting the flanges
3. Since I don’t weld I would have to pay to have them made… $150

If there is enough of a desire for these pipes I will look into it and see if the dude can cut me a group price or somethin. Everyone is hurting for work around here so it may be possible. I would also have to look into the flange issue...
