Default Why am I backfiring all of a sudden?

So last week I stripped out the header bolt insert. Today I used a tap and die to repair it. I used a SAE bolt that ended up slightly bigger. Now the pipes are on nice and tight. When I was riding the dang thing kept backfiring. And I wasn't even riding hard. I kept the rpm's lower than usuall. It only did it twice and my friend who was riding behind me said it was a huge ball of fire that almost exploded when it came out. What the heck! I didn't do anything different.

Could it be that I didn't tighten the bolt enough and there isn't enough compression? My buddy said the fuel is now running too rich. WHat would cause that to happen? And how can I change it without getting a fuel processor?
