Default Air Filter Mod & TFI install

Well kids, an amazing thing happened this weekend.

Sunday, no plans for any DIY (AKA "get up that ladder fatboy!").

No plans for a wekend away, NO RAIN, and the house to myself!

So I goes rummaging through the shed to pull out a couple of the Mod kit I have had for months!

Okay, here we go, first off I did the air filter mod.

Step 1, se up workbench with the 'bits' and a cup of coffee!

Next, whip off the seat and tank, to reveal a true naked bike!

Then, off comes the chrome football and the associated paraphernalia... thus

Leaving the naked lady even more so, in fact she now has her jugs on display!!

ast thing to go is the wee bracket thingy. I actually took a close up on this as there was quite a bit of corrosion on the jugs, covered by the air box. I wish I had done this mod a year ago - or at least before the winter!
(Sorry 'tis a wee bit blurry)

Okay.... strip doon complete..

Default Next up.....

Fitting the mod kit... which was a doddle..

First fit the crankcase oil breather filter. Actually we'll be getting back to this little bugger later...

It is the wee red fellah right beside the green cable connector. You may also note the solenoid just to the south-west of it, this is the remainder of the pair valve setup.

Next, fit the new air filter. Then cable tie up the three sensor 'black box' thingies..

Hey Presto! job done, return to stone cold coffee, neck it in a onner, leg it up the stairs to make a fresh one, eg it back down the stairs sit in the green stripey chair and sip coffee, through a smug grin.

Default Then the TFI Install

Finish off the cup of coffee BEFORE it gets cold!

Take off the side cover and find a suitable spot to position Mr. Dobecks TFI thingy..

ER.. NO FATBOY!!! The other side cover!!

like this.... I used the enclosed velcro to fasten it to the bike.. *top tip* if you are using the self-adhesive velcro, make sure you clean the surface to be used with some Isopropyl Alcohol or something similar, and remove all traces of oil/grease, that way it should stay in place, (for longer than 5 minutes at least!).

Then. Red (TFI) wire, to thew brown wire that goes to the r-send loom, also note that on the other side of that cable connector block, the Brown wire becomes Grey!
.... Er... sorry it's a bit blurry again..

Then the Blue and Grey (TFI) wire connect into the Grey/White and Grey/Black wires on the upper plug to the Engine Control Unit.

another very blurry picture... sorry

The Black (TFI) wire, goes to the battery and .... Job done.

Sit back on the green stripey chair and have another coffee and a smug grin, or if you prefer a Coke and a Smile..

The wee camera was playing silly buggers, so I couldn't get all the pictures right, however, if any of you kids need to see them better, let me know and I'll charge the SLR up.

Yes very sexy.

What's with the billboard sized yellow license tag????? Talk about wind drag.

How did it run with the new mod?

Default A quick 45 mile test ride....

I set the TFI up as per the instructions (standard settings) as I will request specific settings later, it all gets a wee bit flaky as I have the Lambda sensor PITA.

Anyway even set up like this I was bouncing off the rev limiter in no time! the difference in acceleration is noticable, and I had the speedo past 115MPH before I had to slow down.. She was still climbing as I shut the throttle (I had run out of road, I was approaching a roundabout and even I wouldn't attempt the barloan roundabout at 115!!

So back on track, I had just parked the trusty steed up and WHOA!! SMOKE!!!.

So I had a look around the engine and I noticed fluid all over the aft Jug and bugger me! The oil breather filter neck had disintegrated..

Thus..

I will get a replacement and I may fit it on the end of a short legth of tubing, as I thought it was a wee bit snug with the frame.

I reckon constant vibration against the frame may well be the culprit.

It's the law over here, we have to run around with a garage door fitted to the back of the bike.....

And if you fit a slighly smaller one the Po-Po will ticket you for it!

Where are your front turn signals? Are they on your mirrors?

damn Buster!! That is sexy as can be.....

Can you keep us updated to how the bike runs with the new filter set-up, this is something I've been contemplating doing for awhile now. If it works well, I'll be following in your footsteps here.

Lookin' sharp, man. Great job.

I love how the rear luggage support brackets are shaped like a reversed mirror image of the chrome fender braces. The pipe looks sweet.

It's a very sexy one!

Ah but seriously.. I have fitted it raked back to the same angle as the clock, this is more for aerodynamics than rain protection, I don't like he big cruiser screens they seem to contradict the styling of the M.

Here you go

One of the handiest things you'll ever do, originally I had a gloss black box and it suited the bike beautifully, however, it was a cheaper one and cracked like a smile all over!

This one has been brilliant... and come complete with the fitting plate and is very easily removed/replaced.

The back rack is a different story, that comes from Highway Hawk and went rusty within a couple of months and I mean pitted rusty, very disappointed in the finish on this product and it cost me £60.00! ($120.00).

Here it is

I am not sure whether this is typical but the pannier rails either side of the back wheel ar also Highway Hawk and they have been superb.. on since i've had the bike

Thanks DJ, well a couple of minor jobs to be done before the full stip down and the paint job in the Hellcat Style. I want to finish the jobs and spend a few days test riding before the big strip.

All being well once the paint job is done there should be no, I mean, NO chrome....
