Default Going from 2nd to 3rd gear.

Hi All,

Sometimes when i go from 2nd to 3rd gear it does not fully engage to the next gear. I hear and feel the clicking in my foot but when I release the clutch i am still in 2nd. It does not happen all the time... but to often.

Thoughts?

Are you sure that you are letting the shifter drop all the way, if it doesn't you'll get the feeling but won't actually change the gear.

Thats happened to me before, usually when I am really gunning it. What weight oil do you have in, I thought mine started happening after I changed my oil.

I don't know what weight it is. I had my first service done at the dealer (part of my purchase plan). Yeah mine started happening around 1100 miles after my first service at 600.

How is yours now?

Good call.
May need to have the shifter adjusted a tiny bit to prevent that.

That happens to me at stoplights when I'm in neutral and I try to get into 1st occasionally. Kind of annoying, and I don't think I'm doing anything wrong

They have a good point, I did put on my forward controls and oil change right about the same time it started happening. My control arm might need to be adjusted.

Totally different problem than going from 2nd to 3rd.

Yeah, for this one you just need push on the shifter and let your clutch out a little and then back in again. It may grind a little but it will go in.

It has happened to me 2 or 3 times ( the neutral to first problem ). I have not seen it since I started adjusting my clutch regularly.

The from second to third problem sounds like the shifter needs to be adjusted to me as well.

How do you adjust the shifter? I checked the owners manual and shows how to adjust the clutch but not the shifter.

There is a little rod about 2" long right behind the shifter, I think one side threads in and one side threads out.

I had this problem a lot too, turns out I was keeping a little bit of pressure on the shift peg after shifting into second and it wasn't 'resetting' the shifterfor the next gear but felt just like it had shifted. I started taking my toe all the way off the shifter between gears and no problems since...just became natural after about a week.

I see that rod. Not really sure what I should do to it. Should I turn the front or back nut. Am I suppose to hold the middle of the rod with a vice-grip?

Sorry to be so newb... i just want to do it right.

My problem is a little different. My shifting has gotten much smoother now that I have 3k miles on it. However, it seems that when it "clunks" a little going from 1st to 2nd, then it will "clunk" all the way to 5th.

However, if it is a smooth shift from 1st to 2nd (meaning you don't even hear or feel it shift, very smooth), then it is a guarantee that it will be "smooth" all the way up to 5th. When it "clunks", it is like something is not quite syncronized and it is a little out of sync all the way up.

I need to read up on adjusting the clutch since I have never done that. I had the dealer change the oil when I bought it (1100 miles). It now has a hair over 3k miles so I will probably change the oil again soon (doing it myself from now on).

Oh, okay. That sounds like a simple solution. Hopefully I'll actually remember it should it happen again

Interesting. sometimes the shift from 2nd to 3d on mine isnt as smoooth as the other shifts are. have to make a more "positive" lift with the boot-top to make the shift work. wonder if its just the "Nature of the Beast"?

Strange as it sounds, I think it is probably the rider that is out of "sync".

I adjusted my clutch. Feels easier to shift but I still sometimes get that problem shifting from 2nd to 3rd. How do I adjust that shifter?

Also... just wondering if any of you guys changed to synthetic oil. Did it make a difference?
