Default Iron Butt on an M?

Anybody done an Iron Butt on an M50? I'm thinking about working my way up to this...don't have any idea why I want to, people do call me crazy

Thoughts, opinions on trying it? I think with proper seating the body could handle it. The bike shouldn't have a problem I wouldn't think....

Sounds interesting, but could be a lot of work. I have a friend with a hard tail chopper, i've riden it a few times, but I can't say that I would enjoy a 600 miler on it. Around town though it's a blast.

You would definitely want a good seat for it, lots of foot positions, and a good windshield to cut down on fatigue.

I'm personally not a big fan of iron butts, I think pushing yourself to go 1000 miles in 24 hours just leads to some dumb decisions. But if you want to go for one, then more power to you, and the bike can definitely handle it.

I've got an Explorer on the way (hopefully coming today), a decent sized windshield, but I don't have any highway pegs and I don't have forward controls.

I'm going to slowly work my way into longer and longer distances I think and see what my threshold is...

i'm thinking of doing the iron butt on my M...

i've ridden quite a bit this year... all hours of the day/night and in every weather on all sorts of roads...

the biggest challenge is the mental game...
i've done 1000km on country roads in less than 24 hours. using interstates i could have done 1000miles easily...

i've done about 3 - 24 hour rides so far... biggest problem is staying focused...

I would have a hard time doing this....as it is my bike sometimes rocks me to sleep on the ride home from work.

I catch myself all the time, in a not quite awake mode...and have to pull over & gather myself back up again.

Yeah...I know this sounds bad & I guess it is. But I got a crappy ticker...and between the meds I'm on & the fatigue from a 10 or more hour day this does sometimes happen.

However, my insurance is paid up & I'm always on back roads...so the odds of me causing someone else harm is very limited.

that's the thing... it's easy to fall alseep on a bike... i didn't think so until it almost happened to me on my trip.
funny thing is that it was noonish, had a lot of sleep, etc...

the scenery was putting me in lala land...
rule of thumb... pull over at least once an hour and you won't get fatigued as easily...

A friend of mine at work just did it a couple of weekends ago. He and 3 other guys in Harley Road Kings. They started in Dover De, went over to Virginia, down to NC and back up through the Bay Bridge tunnel. Left at 3 AM and got home about 9 PM. His bike is a 2004 completely stock with +40K miles on it.

I think it can be done, im contiplating it, but not sure. I recently rode 650 miles in 13 hrs, 8am to 9pm, and that included stops for gas, food, and rests. I had stock seat, and no windshield. I feel I could have made the other 350, but I was already at my destination

the bike can do it easily... with some route planning and some tunes it shouldn't be a problem

Going to floorboards + crash bars + highway pegs was the best thing I ever did for my riding distance, besides adding the Mustang touring seat. Having options for where to put your legs really makes a difference in comfort. I can go from legs all the way stretched out forward to a nearly-standard riding position with my feet almost under me.

I've also done a 1300kms in 1 day and thats when I decided to get a seat upgrade. My a$$ still hurts from that run.

Man, I hope you have a good reason for going to St. Louis....I lived there for 13months and boy is it a crappy city.....

On another note, the girl and I are going to be over in VA Beach for a night in a few weeks...

my current seat is a 10g steel pan with no cover. It's not an iron butt ride if your seat is padded. In my opinion that is!
