Wilco. I was planning on taking a 400 mile ride back to Memphis this next week, but I have been put on alert for Gustav out in the Gulf. It may be a week or three before i get to take any really long rides now. I will still be doing normal riding around town and to work though. So far it is holding up well.

Well it's been about a month since I blacked out the exhaust. It has held up fine, survived two hurricanes and me lol. I have only gotten to put a few hundred miles on it since the black out though.

I will post pics later. after alot of dedicated work for one who has never done such a thing as paint exhaust black, they come out looking great. I let them set and cure since last thursday due to weather, and rode in stock exhaust( almost feel asleep). Today i put them on and they looked great on the bike. I started the bike and got ready to ride. When i come back outside, they were smoking and started to bubble. ??????????? What should I do next. I dont know where I went wrong. All paint were high temp, the gray primer(1 can), black gloss(3 CANS! I MESSED UP AND STARTED OVER AFTER SANDING) and followed up with clear gloss(1 CAN). any help out there.......

Are you painting the cruzers that are in the avitar pic? I know that the stock exhaust like mine the part that you are painting is just the heat shield. Is the 2" section on the cruzers a sheild or the actual pipe? Was the primer high temp as well? If it isn't you will probably be better off just using the High temp paint as your base primer. I hope it turns out better this time. Mine are still holding up great, with no bubbles or peeling.

Power coat would work but it cost about $175 more than the paint. Yes the stock exhaust is chrome plated. It is pretty easy to prep and paint.

Can't use primer or clear. You can only use one style of paint in a high heat situation. If you want a high-heat high-gloss, caliper paint would work best, but I haven't tryed it yet so don't take it to the bank. Your typical rattle can high-heat paint is semi-gloss, so your stuck with that unless you buy a ceramic paint and brush it on from YEARONE or Summit racing, or powdercoat at a local shop.

To get your paint off the pipes liberarly apply paint thinner to the pipes and wash with water and a rag or S.O.S. pad if you want fastest results. Then let dry and buy another stlye paint like "FlameThrower" at Advance Auto etc. Paint first layer dry(very light haze primarly for adhesion promotion),10min later 2 coat is meduim wet(coloration is nearly black), 10 min later 3rd coat is wet. If you want the best possible results, as thin a layer as you can manage, the better your adhesion will be. Perfect paint job is 4 thin layers. Still in 6months-year you will be painting them again if you are using rattle-can.

The BBQ grill paint that i used worked great. They also carry a black paint for exhaust headers that you can pick up at your local auto parts store.

I used a BBQ grill paint as a base coat. It ended up looking bronze, so it became a base coat. I then bought some Black Semi-gloss engine paint which finished it off. Looks great and holds up well. I did a very light sand and no primer. Worked out for me.

Agreed with the previous two posts... there is an engine block paint that I used that comes in gloss black. It's rated for high temperatures (I think up to 500 degrees), which has been working great combined with the accompanying high temp primer and clear coat.

K-ROY: are your pipes covered by any covers like the stock pipes are? My stock pipes with the aforementioned paint hasn't had any smoking or bubbling issues.

Those are Jardine exhaust. The same chrome pipes as in the avatar. The neck of the exhaust has a shield on them, but it made no difference. As promised here are the pics. I went to advanced and picked up some Flame Proof paint(1300-2000). I have nothing to lose now, otherwise they will end up like brushed aluminum, which wasn't that bad looking.

Wow, it's too bad the paint did that...those pipes look great in black. Keep us updated with the flame proof paint.

I will, it may take me a few days or so. The exhaust look great, it took me a while to get them to the smooth glossy finish. Oh Baffels have more than one use. Our pusscat caught a chipmunk and brought it in the garage. Well guess where it ended up.

You know there was another more fun way to get that chipmunk out?? J/K

Gloss black looks real good. I'm glad to see the gloss finish, I don't understand the fascination of matte black anyway.
