Looks great, and you make it sound so easy! I'm with drey though, I really like the look of the hardkrome pipes that just have the tips chromed. Just a few questions though: 1)what kind of primer did you use? 2)what did you use to dry the pipes after you washed them? 3) about how long did it take? 4) did you hang the pipes up for paint, if so how? I really think I might try this, much cheaper than buying new exhaust.

I idea Drey had does sound pretty cool. The primer was Dupli-Color sandable primer. I just used paper towels to dry after washing they worked fine. It really didn't take all that long, about 3 to 4 hrs total time. I broke it up a bit because I was debadging at the same time. Oh and sportscenter was on too. I didn't hang the pipes; because I was worried that the paint may try to run, so I layed them across the top of my bbq grill.

That would look awesome Geoff. Those tips would give it just enough accent to make they girl in the cage next to at the red light leave it sitting there and jump on board with ya.

Yes, well the one pipe that was chrome all the way around I did. The other one is just a shield and the actual exhaust pipe is already black.

Dude, that is the hotness! I just installed the Thunder Tornado and might give this paintjob a shot. I think the contrast of the chrome Tornado and chrome exhaust ends against a black bike would be fantastic. But I'll definitely try to do it with some glossy black paint instead of the flatter black you have on there.

Thanks for the quick-and-dirty DIY!

man i must have painted too fast. i only painted whatever you painted just to see how it looked on my bike first. didn't have time to do anything else. here's the pics but the paint comes off with my finger nail. scratches easy. good thing my wife didn't take the heat wrap tape back yet. i think i'll just wrap over the whole pipe and shields. out of sight, out of mind. i'll leave just the tips chrome. i rushed to paint cos i started probably 630 and tried to finish around 9 cos i wake up for work at 5am. does yours scratch easy? if not i'm guessing i just painted over top of paint that wasn't fully cured yet. anyone know if there's damage that could happen with heat wrapping the pipes AND shields too? might look too thick lol

No mine doesn't scratch that easy. I had a few scratches that I had to touch after putting the pipes back on. The scratches where from the allen wrenches and the flange at the end that kept sliding back down.

Agreed, I think the matte black looks pretty awesome on the silver, too. The whole two tone idea reminds me of the Harley Night Rod, which incidently, I also love
