40 mph is putting no power to the wheels... it's just above idle

But I'm saving on gas mileage. I don't 'ride it like I stole it'. There are too many idiots around here driving 17 ton pick up trucks while pulling horse trailers and soccer moms talking on their cell phone while putting on lipstick, eating a donut, drinking their coffee, reading a newspaper with five screaming brats in the back of their 25 ton SUV, doing 90 in a 60 mph zone. I want to be able to react to those idiots by being able to see them in a timely manner. But then again, I'm the guy that rides the right hand lane most of the time so the speed demons can pass me by but at the same time I keep up with the flow of traffic. I haven't gotten a moving violation in over 13 years (probably closer to 15 but I'm not sure) and I like it that way. I know I can nail it when I want to and need to. I don't have to show off because as we all know, Silver and Black is fastest.

Of course there are bikes that are way faster. If that's what you're looking for, the M50 is probably not for you. I think the bike has plenty of power for everyday use. Fast bikes these days will do 0-60mph in 3.5 seconds or so. The M50 is more like 5 seconds. Fast for a car, not so fast for a fast bike. Is it fast enough? Personally I think so, if you're interested in riding at speeds that you can handle on a bike with no fairing or windshield. Just my two cents.

I will agree if you debaffle or go with a slip on afetrmarket, it only gets louder. If you install a full aftermarket system, you'll definitely have some performance gain while shaving about 25 lbs of the bikes weight.

Wait until you hit about 6,000 miles and you will feel what feels like a power increase. I don't know what it is about that milestone, maybe it's just got broken in, but you will feel something different. Then about 15,000 take it in for the valve adjustment and you will feel another jolt of energy (they sync the throttle bodies and that will give a few ponies too). Meantime, like Georgiaroller said "If you got about a grand to spend, go ahead and get the pipes, intake, and fuel processor", I think that will boost you up about 10 to 12 ponies too. I now have 18,000 miles on mine and it's running stronger than it ever has.

Just my 2 cents.................

This chart may come in handy in light with this discussion. Numbers are for stock rear tire and gearing. Additional information is that someone posted that he thought the redline for the M50 is 7800 rpm - seems about right to me.

I've cut 5 little slivers of red tape and stuck them on my speedo at the approximate places of redline in all 5 gears.

People get acclimated to their vehicles. You see it all the time with the big SUVs. People get a big SUV with the V8 and at first they are impressed with the power and size of their purchase. They love that it has lots more torque and power than their 4 cylinder family car. They drive their SUV with a certain respect. If, right after the purchase, the dealer offered a 20 horsepower upgrade kit for $400 they'd often say, "No. It's got enough power".

Fast forward 6 months and those owners are often driving their SUVs like a sportscar. They whip in and out of traffic, punch it when they need to pass someone, etc. Offer them 20 more horsepower for $400 and a lot will take the offer. Some will spend a lot more for a similar gain.

So what changes? Not the vehicles. The drivers/riders change.

You don't want that tool bag. It's a piece of s#*t. I bought a new one at Walmart of all places, from Bell. It cost me about $25 and the mounting straps are a lot better, it looks better and is bigger than the one in the picture. I'll take pictures of it today or tomorrow, pop it on my photobucket site and post a link here.

If I felt like it was a decent enough bag I'd give it to you but it really isn't worth spending the time to mount it. That's why I bought the Bell bag.

If you feel like meeting some place, that would be fine by me as long as I don't have to travel far (I'm near 820 and 199, NW Loop). I'm in a moderate amount of pain today and I could be ready to leave in about an hour. If you want to meet for lunch, that would be fine by me.

Ok an update. I have put on 400 miles from the time of my last post. I decided to really get to know my bike. I got really ballsy with the bike to stretch out the engine. I ran it hard on the first 3 gears and this thing has really loosened up. I got it up to 90mph for the first time and after that ride everything is much more smoother.

I am not just blowing smoke here. The bike has really gotten that much better. I can't wait till I put on a couple more thousand miles.

I know it's just an 800cc but the M50 has bigger balls than i thought. I ran with a friend who has a v-star 1100 and he couldn't believe I was only running 800cc. Ran it about a quarter mile, pulled away and he could not catch me. Got it to around 75 then I had to let off the throttle because the of the light. If it was not for the light I still had plenty to go.

I am a believer and it does get better

Thanks all for your input.
