What a fantastic photojournal! I also am envious of your ride. Plus, you have a cool John Bon Jovi thing going. You've got it made, dude.

I did do the entire trip solo. The plan was to go with a friend but he couldn't make it so I did it anyway.
I had a Coleman X2 tent and a sleeping back strapped to the front of the sissy bar. Together with a back pack, I had a pretty comfortable back rest.

In one of the side saddle bags I fit all my clothes. In the other one, I put all the tools, chargers and electronics, rope, as well as an axe and machete. The axe helped with hammering the tent into the ground.

In the back bag I fit any food and water I was carrying as well as a small drum, toiletries, medicine, and extra shoes. If needed, when camping out, if possible, I would unload the bike and go pick up wood. Otherwise I would tie it to the back seat (which wouldn't leave much room for me but I managed).

I had the easy brackets and the XL river-road bags. That combination hasn't worked that well for me. If the bags are just hanging off the easy brackets, they will sag and hit the pipe or just look misshaped. I ended up using the easy brackets just for support and making additional holes in the saddlebags and strapping them under the seat.

I don't know either. But I think it's because for like a hundred miles you see the signs and that brainwashes you enough to just stop.

There was no unplanned maintenance on the M50. I got it 2008 and had ~ 1,500 miles on it when I left. I stopped at Suzuki dealers just to get service. Denver was the cheapest place.

did you cook over open flame or bring a cooking stove?
I want to get more into the camping/biking thing... it's a learning curve for sure

got the next trip planned yet?

I packed some tinfoil to throw some potatoes into the coal and bought this extending metal fork in Walmart to cook sausages - really convenient. Always best to cook over coal once you burn enough wood.

There's nothing like cooking a meal on the fire and having some beer after a day of riding. One of the most peaceful times I can remember.

Nothing planned out yet... Maybe a couple years before I'll have the time to do this again.
