I went on my first "long trip" this past weekend. Drove 175 miles and it was all highway driving. Probably averaged 65 to 70 for about 3/4 of the trip. I personally don't find it fun(relaxing) to ride my M above 55-60mph.

I got 37mpg on the trip. That sucks!!

Any ideas on why the mileage was so low. Figured I would break 50mpg since I was all highway driving. Maybe cuz I was riding faster and had the RPM's up high that it was so low.

Thanks for any advise.

Somethings off, if you are getting the mileage you say in the city, there's no reason you shouldn't get at least that on the highway. Cruising along at 70 is much more fuel efficient then the stop and go, sit and idle, shift shift shift city driving. I think when you stopped to take a leak, one of your riding buddies sucked out 2 gallons of your gas....

I get 52-54 average with pretty much all highway driving. I go about 65-70mph. All stock...no windshield...i dunno maybe its the gray/black paint scheme....

Best mileage I had was when breaking-in the M50. You can also check if you're cruising at 60mph in 4th instead of 5th. The gear ratio is close enough that we I first bought the M50, I felt comfortable to be in 4th gear sometimes not shifting to 5th gear at these speeds.
========================
Granted if you're high reving the M50, none of the below applies

Best mileage on the M50
66.36mpg /146mi @ 2.2 gal
-------------------------------
Average: 59.42 mpg

Ahhhhh, finally what I needed to hear! "See honey, the guys said it was my color that is messing up the gas mileage, I need that new paint job!"

Sorry but it is not the color either. I have a SILVER 2006 M50 that is stock except for the National windshield. I do mostly freeway riding back and forth to work. I keep the speedometer on 65 and get 50-55 MPG. If I ride the back streets I can get arround 57 MPG with the bike.

Default average about 50mpg

Definitely average about 50 here, only time it drops down like that is flying down the road 70+ mph.
Out here in South Dakota, so there is lots of open road, but if I watch the throttle I can push 50mpg easy.

Just returned from a ride and got just a touch less than 60mpg, that is combined freeway and two lane riding. I usually drive about 60 mph on the two lanes and about 70 on the interstate. This is without a windshield.

With my stock '07 M50, the last two times I filled up, I've averaged 55 and 57 mpg...typical NE Ohio suburban roads, just normal driving, no freeways. That's with about 1700 miles on the odometer and no windshield.

Switch gas/fuel stations ...

the Sunoco near me gives me lower mileage than if I use the Shell station.
Possible explanation(s) is either;

(a) tanks at Shell are newer and gas is pumping cleaner
- or -
(b) Sunoco is getting cheap gas from another supplier and charging more and the gas is not so clean.

Reason I bring this up is one of the bikes I had 20+ years ago (Suzuki 650) -
I used to gas up at the cheapest station (in Montreal) and ended up
having to spend big bucks to get the engine cleaned from guck from
cheap fuel.

just a shot in the dark ...

are both 100% gas or any blends (ethanol) if so, that might make the difference.

you know, i noticed the same thing too... Sunoco gas sucks... Esso isn't too bad, but i find shell is the better burning fuel... go figure..

motojpizzle... i think all the fuels up here have up to 10% Ethanol...
says it on most pumps anyhow... only way to get the octane rating to 87

ahh its a canadian thing - sounds like sunoco might have some other additives causing this drop in mileage - is it cheaper at Sunoco or same price as Shell?

dunno.. i've seen the same truck dump the same fuel at 3 very different gas stations before...
i think it's in all the additives...

Just got back from a 700 km trip. It all worked out that I averaged 61 mpg for the trip... And that was running it fairly hard for quite a bit of it.
