Default 1st Service = OUCH to Wallet

Just got off the phone with the dealer I bought the bike from and first service is gonna run around $400.00 for parts and labor. HOLY OUCH!

Ill pay it if its reasonable cause I want to do everything right, but any of you with more experience see any shenanigens here? Should I change my own Fluids to drop the price some? Im not the most mechanicly inclined so I dont mind paying for good service, I just dont want to be taken to the cleaners.

$400 bucks is a little over the top......Should not cost more than $200-$250 and that must include: oil and oil filter change, final drive oil change and valve adjustment.

If you really want to save, change the oils yourself and omit the valve adjustment - usually not that necessary until much later on - unless it prevents you from sleeping, go ahead and do it......if your mechanically inclined, you can attempt the valves yourself (search forum for how to).....otherwise the oil change is very straight forward.

Parts? I assume they only mean fluids and oil filter. To me it's steep. Except for the valve adjustments everything else is easy to do. The only benefit I see in getting a dealer to do the work on the bike is for warranty reasons. If something goes wrong as a result of the work they fix it with zero $ out of your pocket.

Ask them exactly what this service is including and post it here and we can tell you if it's worth it or not.

Mine was around $175, but that was 3 years ago. I would expect CPI increases, but not that extreme.

Your warranty, is still good and zero $ out of your pocket. If you do the work yourself, just make sure to save your receipts, and keep a log of what you did, the miles and date.

Ok thanks very much guys! I just called around to more service areas here in Minneapolis and got quotes of $250.00 plus parts, which feels much more reasonable. I may even take her over to a friends to do the main oil change so I dont have to pay for thier parts.

Seriously...369.00 + parts!!! What are they thinking?

Mine was $201. For the longest time I thought that I never did the first service until a few weeks ago when I was cleaning out the storage that I found my first service receipt.

The dealer closest to me wants like $375 to do it. I didn't buy from this dealer cause their prices was so much than all other dealers. The dealer I bought from is an HOUR away and wants $170 for the same service... What's ups with these dealers? I have to drive an hour now to any dealer that has reasonable prices.

I spoke with 3 Suzuki dealers in my area when mine was due. Two of them told me not to worry about the valve adjustment at all, and the third told me that they just listen to the engine and if they hear no unusual valvetrain noise, they don't adjust them. So I just did the oil and rear lube change myself. Took less than an hour, and cost about $35.00 for parts.

I did mine for 32 bucks and some frustration (oil filter was stuck on and I had to screw driver it) I'll be checking the valves and my spark plugs on Sunday, I seem to be running a bit hot.

Before everyone freaks out, first ask what all is included in the service.
I have a friend with a shop, and he charges between $350-400 for the 1st service. BUT, he puts new EVERYTHING on. New fluids all around, plugs, wires, etc., valve inspection/adjustment, and a really close once-over of all nuts and bolts.
Very thorough, but not cheap.
On the other hand, I think my stealer charged $150 simply to change fluids & oil filter.
If the service is like the former, then OK. If it's like the latter, then

They didn't adjust valves on mine on the first check. However, if a true comprehensive check is done then $350-400 is reasonable although the M50 and C50 have, in hindsight, proven that a comprehensive check isn't necessarily needed. Many have the fear though of being charged for work that was not done or only halfway done.
