how much do they charge per hour for labor? Parts are pretty much the same or close in price everywhere but labor is where they get you!!

I had my first service done at the most expensive dealership on the planet, Harley Davidson (yeah I know flog me later). Anyway, it only cost me $109, but they did not adjust any valves. Pretty much charged that much for an oil change and a few other odds and ends.

Wow...I'm surprised they even did it.
I have a friend who rides a Kaw. He was riding from Dallas to Austin, TX, and he got a flat in Waco.
Stopped at the nearest dealer, which was an H-D dealer. They told him they don't work on metric, filled his tire, and gave him directions to the nearest Kaw dealer.
Quite lame if you ask me. If I ever do buy a Harley, I'll be godamm sure not to spend any cash there.

Default Your own service

Anyone that does their own servicing on a bike have any suggestions on saving money for those that are "not" so good with there hands, at least on a bike anyway!!
I was thinking of doing an oil change myself once and then the next time letting the dealership do it with all of their tightening all the screws and checking everything else out. I don't even know what all they do. But if it saves me a couple bucks why not?! What do they do at the dealership anyway that you couldn't do yourself?

The dealership is pretty cool. There stuff costs an arm and a leg but they also "deal" with/in metric bikes.

You are getting ripped off. My dealer offered $50 off first service and 10% off parts/labour (becuase I bought the bike from them). Total bill after taxes was $205 (CDN). About $180 before taxes.

That does seem a little high. Much higher than any shop I've ever seen.

Default first service

Yeah I know it's alot! could be, because this is wonderful N.J. Ha! Most of it is labor to set the valves, they seem to sound o.k. to me. This is really the rip-off state!

most times at 600 miles your valves wont need to be adjusted, but maybe at 1000 or 1200 they might

I've done the valves on my M50 and three other C50s and ALL of them were tight at the first (600 mile) check. I'd recommend that the initial valve clearance check NOT be postponed at all.

At 7500 miles only one valve was a little tight on my M50, at 15K all were right on. My next check will be at about 25K based on that.

Ray Nielsen, in Minneapolis and went for a ride today!

My dealer recommended that based on all the M50's and C50's they serviced, the valves did NOT need any adjustments made at 600 miles but closer to 1000 miles. If you do take your bike in at 600 miles and the valves do not need to be adjusted you will have to take them back before 1200 miles to have them adjusted. If you wanted to make sure that when you took your bike in for the first service and that the valves were adjusted, you might want to wait up to 1000 miles.

Mine was close to $200 down here in Houston. I'm sure location and service provided have a lot to do with it.

My wife has her Saturn Outlook's oil changed at the Dealer and it's close to $50 (incl. tax). We went to visit friends in Seymour, WI in it and the dealer up there only charged $25.

when i did my first service it i did it in two parts...
at about 600 miles i changed the oil and at about 1500 miles i got the valves done... they were totally out of whack...

in all it cost me about $400 and they tightened up all the bolts (except for the tail light assembly) and adjusted the brakes, etc...

it was worth it... but from now on, i'm doing all the work unless it's something way out of my league...

Default 600 Mile service

I just made an apointment for my 600 mile service for next Wednesday. They quoted 300 plus parts. The Dealer I purchased from quoted 280 plus parts, but said they were booked for 6 weeks. Next Wednesday is more along the lines of when I will hit the big 600 and not sometime in November! The dealer said the 600 mile is required for the warranty, not sure if he was blowing me a smokey colonic or what. I will post the total monetary damages when I know them. I am also going to mark some of the bolts to make sure they do the valve adjustment like they say they are supposed to.
