| Well had the bike for about 2 weeks now and ready for the 600 mile service. Still don't know if i should go synthetic (redline or royal purple) or go with just regular Valvoline 4stroke oil. Anyone switch to synthetic right after there first service? Will be doing this service tomorrow night.

| I switched to Amsoil full synthetic at first service and have been running it ever since. Have over 11,000 on her now with no complaints.

| I switched to Rotella Syn. at 600...bike loves it and its cheap at walmart...at 4400 miles now...no prob.'s...shifts smooth, and seams to run cooler. also put mobil 1 syn in the rear gears at 600 miles. |

| Seat Tester | I've gone to synthetics at the first change in all my bikes since 1983 with no problems. My preference is Mobil 1 15W-50 with the Gold Cap. That's the extended change version as opposed to the red cap. Still, either one is a good oil and does NOT contain friction modifiers that MIGHT cause clutch slip. Shell Rotella T Synthetic, Amsoil and probably others are good choices too. Buy whatever is handy and available in your area. I find that Wal-Mart and Target usually carry the Mobil 1 stuff and that's important on the road too. Ray Nielsen, in Minneapolis and went for a ride today! |

| Whatever you do make sure the rubber seal comes off with the old oil filter. I changed mine at night with a flashlight and accidentally didn't remove it. Put the new one on and filled her up. Idled it a while with no drips next morning i revved it to merge onto the freeway and down i went 2 qts fresh synthetic oil on the rear tire.

| I tried the Royal Purple. After about 300 miles I was shifting hard and loud. Went another 200 or so and said heck with this, drained it and went to regular motorcycle oil. No problems since. I would not suggest royal purple.

| I purchased my bike with 2000 miles on it. It had an aftermarket oil filter, so I'm sure it was changed at least once, probably at the 600 mile service. I did my 4k service last night, and the oil was nasty. Whoever did it probably used standard 10w-40 automotive, which will not hold up in a bike. I went with Mobil-1 racing synthetic for V-twins. It's amazing the difference it makes. The noises I had started to hear are gone, even the sound the bike makes when coasting to a stop and downshifting into first gear. I will be looking to go with a cheaper synthetic next time around, but I am more than pleased with the results.

Is this oil for motorcycles? If not then immediatly drain it and put oil made for motorcycles in it. Reason being is oil for cars is made for engines only, the transmission is dry. For bikes the tranny gears are cooled in the engine oil, therefore the oil is blended differant to take care of the gears to. You need motorcycle oil in there or bad things will happen Quote:
I run royal purple in mine, have not had any problems with mine, but have heard not much in the good side so I have contiplated switching to ammsoil, but local dealers are not so local where as royal purple is sold where I work | ||
