Default Used M50 Question

First a little of what we are doing, we have money down on a '08 M50, waiting for the house refi to go through should be this week. So we should have a new bike by the end of the month.

This is going to be my bike for the first year or so till she gets a few more miles under her tires on her bike and gets comfortable with riding.

Wife asked why there were so many used M50's for sale and that maybe we should consider a different bike.

For me it looks like the best bang for the buck.

I coudn't give here a good answer.

Can anyone help me out on this?

Many being ridden = many being sold as part of normal owner turnover. Also, some consider it a good segue to a "real" bike (a Harley, for those unfamiliar with "real" bikes).

Welcome to M-J. I passed through your town recently.

Funny I live close to Atlanta, GA. Almost 5 Millon people and you can hardly find any M50's for sale. Not sure why you'd see alot for sale in your area. The M is a good bike for anybody. Not everyone wants a 1500cc or 1800cc or a overpriced Harley. The M is fuel injected, liquid cooled, shaft drive. Pretty maintenance free, ample power, lightweight, handles very well and yes it really is a bargain for the price you pay. I'm assuming you like the looks of the M. If you want something more subdued and classic looking go with the C50 (exact same motor setup). I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I'm a little curious as to what constitutes "so many". Are seeing 50 of them used and for sale or 5 of them? I'm not trying to pick a fight, just wondering how many you're really seeing. The M is a great bike, especially to start on, if there are really a lot being sold used you might be better off saving some of that refi cash and buying a used one instead of new.

The dealer closest to me only has 1 M and it's a new one, I've never seen a used one in there.

Our dealer here in town still has 2. Not sure how much longer they will hold it, our closing was supposed to be 7/03.

Probably like driving a red VW you never see one till you have one then everyone you see is red.
I asked her and she says there are at least 12 listed on here alone, I just looked and she’s right there are a few.

Really don’t what to buy used again. Been there don’t that.
When we get this M50 we will more than likely keep it for 5 or 6 years.

Alot of guys do buy the M50 as a first bike then later they decide there ready for a larger displacement engine. Some move up to a Honda VTX1800 or even a Harley V-Rod. Also this site has the most M50 owners that you'll find anywhere so your going to get a disproportionate amount of them for sale then in your local community. All I can say is that I'm very happy with mine and have put 8400 miles on it without one single problem of any kind. Good luck with your decision!

Or, as I've seen quite a bit here, a lot of folks move to a non-cruiser style of bike for ergonomic reasons. Thats what I'll be doing.

When you see M50s for sale here on M-J, you've got to consider you are at "M50 Central". I imagine I'll find a lot more boats for sale if I went to Key West instead of the average American town.

I'm in the Atlanta area also and after researching for months decided on the M50. Looked in the AJC (Atlanta news rag) classifieds, Craigs List and Cycle Trader for weeks and found very few. If I did find one it was already sold. I found no used ones at dealers and only a couple new at dealerships one of which I bought.

This used to be a "suzuki only" site, and has one of the few "M50 Specific" discussion boards, so there are a disportionate number of M50 owners here, and thus a disportionate number of M50s for sale. If you check EBAY and bike trader you'll find very few for sale used.

I've had Harleys in the past and will get another again someday. Last 2 I had were a 1978 FLH I bought in 1981 and a 1994 Low Rider I bought new, sold both when money got tight after 9/11 attack.

I like the looks of the M50, will probably do something about the waletail rear fender at some point unless it grows on me.
Soon as we get it I'll post pictures.

I think you might be better off with a c50.

Before buying new, I looked for a used one in my area....none to be found. Since then I've only seen one listed in craigslist.

I’m still waiting for my refinance to go through, don’t want to start a new loan till it does.

I have a little over ½ the money saved and a small down payment to hold the bike, but they would only hold it for 3 weeks.

They gave me a courtesy called me yesterday afternoon and said they had a buyer in the shop, I told them to sell it if the could cause I’m not sure when our closing is going to be.

They sold the bike yesterday afternoon. If they or I can’t locate another I’ll either wait for a ’09.

The way my luck runs I’ll get my new closing date sometime today.

I had decided to purchase a C50 based solely on reviews I found online. Found a bike for sell in the paper, called him, it was an M50. Had never heard of it. So did a quick lookup on the M50 and found that it actually was more liked by owners than the C50. Went and looked at it, rode it, LOVED IT, bought it. Came home, found this forum and just continue to be so pleased with my purchase. I have put about 900 miles on it since i got it. I paid $5k for my 2006 model and it had 1100 miles on it. It was still completely stock and looked like it did the day the guy bought it so I have had to spend xtra $$$ putting goodies on it, but hey, that is part of the fun

I say get an M!!

forgot to mention my main point, after finding out he had an M50 for sale, I could not find any other M50's in my area. I had to get on cycle trader to compare pricing and decide what I wanted to offer. I live in the Memphis, TN metro area.
