Default changing brake pads?

my brakes are getting low... and i'm wondering how easy it is to change out the pads...

i'd done that stuff on a car but i always thought the car was easy...

is it pretty much the same thing? take off the pads, put them back on and bleed the brakes?

maybe i should get a real mechanic to do it...

I don't know the specifics of your bike, but in general it's quite simple. Remove a dust cover, pull a pin, pull the old pads, open the pistons, install the new pads, button it up. You shouldn't need to bleed the lines, but you may want to flush the fluid. Still, if done correctly that doesn't involve bleeding.

yeah, the front break (disk) should be as simple as a car pads replacement.

The rear break (Drum) might be as easy but involves in more steps (removal of housing, wheel etc..)

The M50 Service Manual from Copro's link will get you through the entire process

Hey Clint, do you think we could get that link for Copro's manual put up as a sticky? It gets refered to all the time now, but people have to go digging through old threads to find it.

Who's what now? Perhaps if you provided said link... and if it's an illegal file, nope.

Sorry,

Here is the link:
http://copronymous.com/images/M50-MANUAL.pdf

It's from our friend Copronymous from MJ (in his signature line)
Nothing illegal, just a very hard to find, M50 Mechanic's handbook

Helped me allot when i needed to know location/procedure of components.

Clint, it might be better to download the PDF file then post it to the sticky (if that's possible). That way, if anything happens to Copro's page, the MJ members can still access it.
Or, have a section to every portion of MJ (including sportbikes, other cruisers) where people can download a manual for their bike.

ahh... so it's just changing the pads eh?
hmm... might want to do that before my trip then, sounds easy enough...

when i get back from my trip i'll be working on the bike more than riding i think...
need to:
flush rad
flush brake lines
change brake cable (braided cable)
change clutch cable (braided cable)
change back brake
oil change
change tires...

i'm gonna be broke so i'd better do everything i can do to save some cash...

Let me recommend Dunlopads -- I think the number is DP323, but that's from memory and may be incorrect. The Dunlopads are metallic as the originals are, but provide more stopping power and don't gouge the rotors, at least not in the 17K miles they've been on my M50. Dennis Kirk might have them listed in their catalog or you could do an on-line search at <www.denniskirk.com> where you can select Metric Bike catalog and then type in your bike brand, year and model. A menu will appear that should show brake parts.

Hope that helps.

Ray Nielsen, in Minneapolis and went for a ride today.

sweet ray... might have to go shopping locally tho for this set (leaving in T-minus 9 days)
i've got close to 22000km's on the bike now, and only a few MM's left of pad

$46 for a pair of pads? wow... pretty cheap if you stop to think that these things STOP YOU FROM DYING
cheap chrome plastic bling to put on the bike is more expensive and does nothing... heh

I was thinking about installing new pads on the front rotor to improve braking, and I was just about to ask if someone had a recommendation on brand/models

Anyone else know of any good pads?

Fellas, once that PDF. file of the service manual is done coming up on your computer you can save it permanently. Just click on the symbol that looks like a floppy disk, it is the second one from the left, and tell your computer where you want to save it. The default location is My Documents. I have this on a backup drive now and a copy on my desktop.
I have the actual manual also, but this PDF. version is a breeze to use. When I am looking for something I can just use the search function at the top and type in what I am looking for, such as FI for fuel injection, and I get all the hits about it. It really is a big time saver in the garage and I put my laptop on my workbench while I work. If this wasn't available, I would scan my manual to a PDF. file and be doing it myself. I love it.

It has to be hosted somewhere, and I don't think our owner wants illegal files here. Check out the line at the bottom of page 2: "Copyright 2004 Suzuki". You know what that means, right? If you want to share it privately amongst yourselves, fine, but I don't think we want to tie the site into it. There's a reason most manual sites are hosted in Russia.
