Default $12 part= $7000 lawn decoration

Well, the lacky who installs the oil flters at Suzuki seems to have missed a critical step, oiling the gasket. Decided try to change the oil again tonight, using the advice the mech at my dealer gave me, bought a strap wrench like he said and drained the oil. Cranked it down, following the directions to the "T." Heard a creek, thought I finally had it. Nope, it instead crushed the filter, and put a small hole in it.

Leaving me with a $7000 machine I can't use because of a $12 part... I'll try again tomorrow, it got dark and I didn't have enough cigarettes to not start throwing tools... so much for Zen I suppose... Any suggestions, I'm trying to avoid the screw driver can opener method as I live in an apartment building, all though I could get one of those cookie sheet drip pans and those oil absorbers I suppose..

sometimes (more times than not) is unavoidable

Rip it out, then replace with your new filter etc...

I live in a building also and that's the best option...

I'm confused... you changed the oil, but it's someone else's fault?

Don't feel left out...this happened to me the first time I changed my oil. The filter would not come off. I do all my work at my Bro's dealer and in the end needed to use the screw driver method.

Too complete the story:
I tried to change the oil last week for 600 mile, drained it, and couldn't get the filter off. Got frustrated put fresh oil in it and took it to the dealer the next day, well he didn't have time to do an oil change, still doesn't for a month, but he gave me some advice on how to get it off. I didn't have time to work on it or ride anywhere but the two miles to work last week (damn overtime). Finally had time, so I got new oil and the recommended tool and set to work, where I ran into this problem. Didn't realize it was crunching instead of loosening until it was too late. Everything else on the bike is great, so I'm not knocking Suzuki, looks like someone was having a bad day at the plant and wasn't paying attention, just sharing a horror story.

The last time this happened to me, rather than throwing any tools, I just grabbed a hammer and drove a blade screwdriver through the filter, and twisted the four letter word right off. Not the cleanest or most environmental way of doing things, but it worked.

I've done this with a car filter. I don't know if it's the best way, but it appeals to my brute force mentality.

BTW, next time try to use the K&N filter, they put a hex bolt head on the filter so it's easy on, easy off

I've had to use a large pair of channel locks to get the filter off my car once after taking it to a shop (I usually don't change my own oil in the middle of winter). I had tried the screwdriver but I was just ripping through the steel but I grabbed the channel locks and that did the trick. I never use a wrench when I replace the filter on my cars but I have not changed the oil on my bike yet. Can you just go had tight on a bike or do you have to put a wrench on it?

Hand tight seems to be the general agreement of all of us who change our own oil.

They really don't have to be that tight. Actually, I think they tighten up by themselves after riding a while.

Hand tight is fine, but definitely don't listen to the manual on this part. They say to tighten two turns beyond tight with a wrench. That is completely unnecessary. A good hand tightening is all it needs.

Was soooo happy when i saw that they did that. Was a beast and a half to get off the one the dealership put on. Had to go buy tools for that. Was quite sad to have to head on over to Lowes for that.

Cranking it down and following directions generally involve installing something.

I see your confusion... he strapped down the wrench to the filter following what ever instructions he received on how to do so.

I think you need to review what the manual says. I believe you will find that it is: 2 turns past the point where it just barely makes contact....or something like that. Quite a difference from 2 turns after it feels tight.

Either way, it is STILL too much.

After having to use the screwdriver method on my tractor......where I had to remove body panels to get enough leverage.........I changed from hand-tight, 2 hands to hand-snug, one hand and then check it after the first run.
