Default Spedometer way off...

This morning I decided I'd finally get around to attaching my Garmin Etrex Vista HCx to my handlebar and go for a ride. That's when I noticed there was a huge difference on the GPS speed and the Reported speed from my bike.

I have had this GPS with me on every camping trip and kayaking trip I've been on in the last 2 years besides just using it to navigate my way through the city when I want to find obscure places. Consequently, I've had a lot of time to compare the GPS speedometer to those of the cars and trucks I've been traveling in and they have always been pretty much dead on.

This morning though, while I was out riding I noticed a large discrepancy. At 30-55 mph the reported speed of the bike is about 5 mph too slow. Thinking this was odd, i drove down to Clay Station, a very wide, very flat, very smooth, and very untraveled road near my house to see the breadth of the misreadings. After getting the bike to tell me it was going a bit over 105 mph, the GPS reported a maximum speed of only 93.9 MPH.

Naturally I parked the bike and then got in the Truck and tried it. The GPS was dead on with the spedometer. Tried it again in the van and it was still only a mph off.

The reason this bothers me is that I've probably been losing precious minutes of my life being a good citizen going the posted speed limits in town while simultaneously pissing off all the drivers behind me by being in their way driving slowly.

Is there a way to adjust the speedometer or should I just get used to the discrepancies and counter mentally?
