| Hi folks, I bought my M50 a couple of weeks ago and have been looking for a forum to interact with fellow riders and M50 owners until I found this site. A little about myself first, I'm a 30 year old male and a relatively new rider and motorcycle enthusiast. Even though I rode a 250cc bike as a teenager, I bought my first cruiser, a Suzuki Savage about a year ago after taking the MSF class. I traded that in for a spanking new 2008 M50 that's the new two-tone color - grey and yellow (hence the username!). I'm really thrilled about the new bike and excited about taking it into the mountains for some twisties. It looks like you guys are all really into your bikes and have some great discussions going on here... I look forward to posting on these forums from now on. So again, a big hello to all of you! Let me end by asking a newbie question. I did not get my manual with the bike. The dealer said they ordered one for me and I haven't received one yet. I don't even know what grade of gas to put in my bike! Someone recommended I use 93 Octane gas at least until the break in period. Can someone confirm this? Thanks! |

| Does the person that gave you that advice happen to own a gas station???!!! Go ahead and put in 87. That is what is in the manual (saying this without manual in front of me), and (as far as I know) everyone runs. I've been using 87 for three yrs. now with no problems. oh and...

| 87 is fine man, I'll occasionaly put in some higher test if I'm hitting the highway or just kinda feel like it, but I've never really noticed a difference between the two. And welcome to the Forum.

| Alternated tanks of regular and premium a couple times when I first bought the bike just to see if I could notice any difference at all in performance. None detected. Nothing but regular since.

| This is a great forum and you will find a wealth of useful information here. It sounds like you did exactly what everyone says to do. Buy a smaller bike, take the MSF course, ride a while, then move up.Welcome to the big leagues. I just went right into the M50, with the MSF Course of course, kinda sounds redundant, anyway welcome and look and learn. Also, you can find a lot of useful information over at the Volusia Rider forum as well. It can be found here VolusiaRiders.com :: Home Enjoy....Enjoy....Enjoy Oh, and KEEP THE SHINY SIDE UP

| Welcome aboard! LOTS of great info to be found on these boards. What part of NC are you in? I'm up in the NE corner of the state Edenton/Elizabeth City area. As for gas, run 87. I've run both and seen NO difference at all. |

If you consider a DJ Drive mod, you can get more highway speed out of the bike, without loosing much, if any, low end. Read the history of this mod here, VolusiaRiders.com :: View topic - Different rear drive ratio/highway cruising, and see what you think. It was developed by a C50 owner for the C50, but it fits the M50 as well, and you will find a few threads here about the subject regarding installations on the M. The result of the mod is that top end RPM's drop by about 500, so that 75mph runs at similar RPM as 65mph stock, rendering 5th gear to be, more or less, like the 6th gear that many of us would liked to have seen on this bike, and of the almost 200 people that have done the mod, most say that the bike cruises much easier at freeway speeds, while 1st gear looses little of its starting power. 1st gear does, however, get stretched out a bit so that it is a real usable gear, and most say that the buck and twitchyness is all but goon. I am on the list to get mine around the 1st week in July. Meanwhile just get used to the bike, and, as stated above by several posters, this is a great forum with little or no flaming. We are simply riders that want the most out of our ride. Keep the questions, and/or things you learn coming. Again, welcome to the forum, Oldie
