I've always wanted to point this out as it could be a good money saver, and do not see why it wouldn't work. Buy a good metal cutting 3" hole saw, it will be worth it. However, as the 1 1/2 inch is only used to center the 3", I assume it could be the cheapest POS ever correct? Theoretically, it wouldn't even matter if they forgot to cut teeth in it. Seems like everyone could save some greenbacks. |

You could only cut the 3" circle, but you wouldn't have very much wiggle space to break the welds on the backend of the baffle unless you bend back the plate around the baffle.

Wow, what a great DIY! I don't have my M50 yet, but when I do, I will certainly do this! Are there any laws about bike pipes/loudness? I know if you take the muffler off your car, it's not quite legal.... |

Hi guys! Have debaffled my bike today! Anyone know where to get some fibreglass muffler material in the UK? I'm not sure exactly what is needed and would appreciate some pointers if anyone knows where to find the right stuff? Cheers! |

Been a week since I debaffled!! It's awesome! I was gonna try the fibrosleeve but I'm still not sure what muffler material to get. Thanks for the link below. But it's an American company. The shipping on that to England would be way more than the product itself! Shipping from some of the Ebay shops that sell this stuff is about £20! It definitely somehow makes the bike feel better!

Outstanding Thread!!! Everyone has posted such great information. Wasn't sure about doing anything with my pipe but after reading this I just might. Definitely a lot cheaper then buying new ones. Speaking of that how does this kind of work on the exhaust differ from the after-market pipes, aside from the obvious $$ difference?

I was reading in an earlier post about the wire mesh and problems with heat causing rust and corrosion. Is it possible to just spray some Hi-Temp Black Spray Paint on the wire mesh after rolling to add a few years to its life? or would this pose a problem somehow. Even if there is no substantial evidence to prove this helps, if it didn't hurt it, then why not?...

You're right: it can't hurt, why not, go for it, etc. But regarding the life of the fibrosleeve, I think you'll find the limiting factor is not the mesh as much as it is the fiberglass packing. If the fibrosleeve is built well, the fiberglass packing will lose its sound absorbing capability long before the mesh gives out. Especially if you get it wet (like when washing the bike). To maintain the deep grumble that I liked so much, I found that I had to replace the fibrosleeves with new ones every 2000 miles or so. |

I recently installed some fibrosleeves and just wanted to pass on a helpful hint for those asking about what type of muffler packing to use. For my first attempt I tried to use the only muffler packing available at my local bike shop. Unfortunately it was extremely fiberous (if thats a word) and was almost impossible to shove into the exhaust pipe. It kept catching on the interior walls and just started falling apart after only a few tries. For my second attempt I ordered the muffler packing available at Motorcycle-Superstore and it worked MUCH better. One side the fiberglass had a smooth, more rigid, coating of some sort which allowed it to slide right in. The first picture of white fiberglass is option #1, which I threw in the garbage. The second picture is option #2 which worked much better. Anyway, just my $.02, hopefully this saves somebody a hassle.
