Default New from Texas!

Well in june I sold my pick-up and bought my bike on the same day... so it is my only ride.

Its been ok, iv'e put 6,000 miles on it so far, and had to ride in all types of weather except the cold, but since it is all i have, i will enduring some cold weather.

BTW, if anyone has particular experiance with highway travel during the cold, i am up for advice.

so far i have a full-face helmet, gloves, and layers of clothes (under armor, longjohns, jackets, rainsuit.)

thanks
-gat

dude, you're from Alabama, you have no room to talk...

and to my fellow Texan, no matter how much you cover and layer, wind and cold will always find a way in a little bit. At least that's what i have experienced

hey gat 76, welcome to the forum. i have ridden my bike in temps down to 19 deg F, which is not cold according to our northern bretheren, and i know 3 things that are definate. 1. Really good warm gloves are not optional. 2. Neck protection is nessesary. 3. Gortex is by far the best material i have found to keep the wind off. your goal is to stop the wind and then warm layers under that and you will be fine. i have tried all types of material and without a doubt gortex is the best i have found. i use the military issue as i am in the national guard here in NC. I actually like riding in the cold.

You can try using a windshield as it will keep some of the wind off of you.

P-ville, Texas

Poolville?
Pottsville?
Pattonville?
Pflugerville?
Plantersville?
Prairieville?

All Texas cities on Texas maps (put out by the Texas Dept. of Transportation) that could or do refer to themselves as P-ville.

Which one (1) are you from?

I rode to work 25 miles in the mid 30's a few times last winter. Get something to cover your neck, chilly air can get in. A pair of good gloves and you're good to go.

I think we have only about three or four weeks of real winter to deal with down here anyway. I know, it's tough right.

The only additional thing I will add is electric glove liners. Run the wires through the sleeves of your main jacket and have the plug down at the bottom of the jacket. It seems like a PITA, but that heat will get into your bloodstream quickly through your palms (and vice versa in the absence of a heater) and will keep you toasty. I would actually sweat while riding around because of the glove liners. That is good down to freezing temps. Then move up to a heater vest for REALLY cold days.
