Default Rear Tire??

Has anyone put on anything bigger than the 170-80/15 for the rear tire on the M50? I heard you can get the Metzeler 200 80/15 but wanted some feedback.

Hit the search feature on the right hand corner. It's doable, some tires work better than others

And welcome!

I was interested in changing to the metzler--but is it realy that much wider? I know the numbers say it 170-200 but in the pics I see on the forum it looks just as wide as the stock one on my bike.

Maby it's just me. does anyone have a before and after pic from the same distance of their bike?

This is an older pic of my bike from the rear,to me it looks the same.

I just had a Metzler 180-70/15 put on after my Pirelli picked up a drywall screw. I do not have a before pic but it does look a little beefier. I am waiting to get a few more miles on them before I start testing the performance.

I don't understand.
I measure an about 10mm clearance at the shaft side with the original IRC 170mm tires. If 200mm should fit, I should expect over 15mm clearance at each side!

not true, since the rim is made for a 170 you will have an "egging" effect which means your 200 mm tire is not 200mm wide on the bike.

Ok, so the width is being decreased, then I suppose the hight is being increased. And the overall (wheel/tire) diameter does not match the original anymore.
80%170= 136mm <=> 70%200= 140mm but with this rim >140mm

the inside diameter of the tires does not change. the radius of the road contact area changes. many people have had them on their bikes from this forum to include myself. i had a 200mm tire on my bike for over a year. it does work.

So does the 200mm tire look any bigger on the bike then the stock 170? Is it even worth spending the extra money if you can't tell the difference?

I am due for new tires soon, and I was all excited about putting a 200mm tire on the back. This is kind of disappointing.

SNAFU, is that the ME880 XXL?

edit: nevermind...it's not. Looks good though. are you changing both tires or just the rear? I'll need to do both eventually & these seem like a good option. I am worried about the rubbing when riding 2up. I read on the other thread that there are no problems, but being a new rider, it might be something I won't want to deal with yet.
