Question Wet M-50 wont start!

Hey everyone, new to the forums today. Someone suggessted that I find a group for riders of the M-50 and right now is the perfect time, I need some help!

I ride alot in the rain, and today was no exception. Its rained up here pretty crazy over the last couple days and my bike kinda sat there. So today i fired it up and took it for a 1 hr drive to my parents house, was there for about and hr and went to leave, in the pouring rain, and it wouldnt start. The bike will turn on (the fuel injection did not kick in, and the clock wouldnt show, but the back light lit up) and the engine tried to turn over but did not work. I waited about 5 and tried it again, it started, but when I revved the engine, it died. I turned it off, put the key in my pocket, and called the gf to tell her id be late. I then saw the spedometer go from 0-220 and back to 0. I tried the bike again, it worked, revved and it stopped. I left it at my parents, im sure it will start tomorrow when its dried. Any ideas on how to fix this or find out whats wrong? I dont want to have to drive my car at all in the summer...

Let me preface this by saying that I know nothing about the mechanics of motorcycles, but this sounds like the cabling recall from a while back. Anyone else?

Well, since nobody else has..........

If it doesn't run when it's wet, then don't GET it wet!

Seriously, the upper part of the bike usually stays pretty dry when riding in the rain (esp. with a windshield) but when just sitting in the rain, EVERYTHING gets wet. Water has a chance to seep down into places that it wouldn't normally go.

After you check out the wiring problem mentioned above, I'd seriously consider a cover if it will sit out in the rain much.

Welcome to the forums....

Try not to let the bike sit out... you'll have problems like what your having and not to mention lots of rust on parts you dont want to have to pay to replace.

I dont mind getting caught riding in some rain, as long as i can get it back and dry it soon, or the rain stops and i can ride it to dry.. but if i end up leaving it out at home and take the car, and it rains when i cant put the bike inside... Im not a happy camper.

Rain won't hurt it. I've rode in alot of it. It has sat in alot of it at work. \

Unless,

I have a tornado intake now, and it's not a good idea without a rain cover....rain in the motor wont help anything. But if your stock it wont be a problem.

I don't believe thats the issua here though.

The problem I've been having when the bike sits out in the rain is that the clutch cable feels loose. It still works the clutch fine, but the lever seems to slip a bit.

My bike is my daily ride, and often sits out in the rain - so I bought a cheap cover, and we all lived happily ever after!

So i found out what the problem was. Although the recall applies to my bike, it has not been affected. It seems that a rock has hit a wire and severed it. The shop found it and soldered it for me, took them two hrs to find it and complete. On the voice mail they left me, they said they recommended a new harness, but when I called back, they said it was 700 bucks, and that the solder should be good enough, and it was just something that a dealership says. But they are doing my valves for 100 bucks too.. so 250 bucks and im back on the road with no more cutting out and a valve job. Thinking i did pretty well!

glad to hear it is sorted.

One more reason why cables (electrical) should be INSIDE the bars.
