Talking RACE: 2006 Suzuki M50 -VS- Honda Shadow Spirit 750

My uncle has a honda shadow spirit 750. He has installed a K&N air filter and installed dynajets in his carb. He had cobra exhaust. Well my other uncle said the honda will hang with the 800's now. My 2006 Suzuki M50 power plant is stock except for the Vance and Hines Cruizers.

Well!!!

We stopped on a back road and lined them up. I said on 3. 1, 2 and the throttles started moving 3, my M50 rear tire broke loose and started getting side ways. I looked back in disbelief. I didn't expect that. When I went into 5 gear, I would say I was between 10 and 15 bike lengths ahead of him.

Having had the Honda Shadow 1100 and the M50.. The M50 feels more in the league of the Shadow 1100 in performance... even though the M50 is only 50cc larger than the 750.

It could also be that you are a much better rider and weigh much less than your uncle

Default Race

We weigh about the same, I may even weigh 10 pounds more and about 1-2 inches taller.

He used to race motorcross, so he should know how to ride.

I guess what surprized me the most was the rear tire breaking aloose and spinning out. I really wasn't expecting that.

Anyway, it was a great ride. We rode about 200 miles yesterday. I hope my Saddlemen explorer seat hurrys and get here, my tail was on its last leg.

For those who know how to ride and launch the M50.. The M50's performance is excellent for it's cruiser class including larger displacement bikes.

Even for myself I don't notice much difference in performance from my M50 and my former Harley Road King dual cam 88 in everyday street and highway use... this includes getting heavy handed on the throttle for fun on both bikes.

If you know how to ride which apparently you do the M50 will suit most if not all you street and highway riding

I have no doubt the M50 can kill a Honda Shadow Spirit or ACE.. My friend who rides a VT750 has poor acceleration above 100kph while the M50 can still keep pulling quicker and faster at almost any speed

I smoked my brother on my M50 ..... *sniff* he rides a M109.

Oh Yeah! 109 Killa.

Just kidding......... But I could say whatever I want, he's just a lurker anyways. If he wants to pipe up then he can become a member on M-J.

Until then

I'm not so sure why a lot of people are so stuck on the M109 as a performance cruiser

If anyone is looking at the M109 as a performance motorcycle it does
12.08-second quarter-mile at 110.53 mph and 3.89 sec (0-60mph). Some say they can get the M109 in the high 11's in the quarter mile. By yesterdays and todays standards as performance oriented motorcycle, it's not very flattering. My 1970's Kawasaki 750 triple did a solid 11 second quarter mi.. okay so it wasn't a cruiser.

Regarding performance cruisers you don't have to look further than the Honda Magna V65 which did a 10.4 quarter mi, out of the crate before getting beat by the Yamaha V-Max by in the 1980's.. both can easily beat the M109 as a performance cruiser and cost much less.

The average cruisers from your Harleys(excluding the V-Rod), Shadows, V-Star and Suzuki Boulevard cruisers are basically just that.. Boulevard cruisers.

Even the performance cruisers like the Magna V65, V-Max, etc. are uncomfortable cruising at 130+mph which is nothing for any of the GSXR/RR motorcycles from 600cc and up. Present day GSXR/RR 600cc can do a minimum of 10's in the quarter mi with better handling than any cruisers made. We won't even get into the GSXR/RR 1000s or the Busa and Ninja 1400.

Colin Edwards and Nicky Hayden are riding and winning on stock M109s in the Superbike Class and MotoGP Class against Honda Rebels and Suzuki Savages. Time to sell my Honda Rebel JUST KIDDING My Rebel beat the Busa yesterday lane splitting NOT KIDDING.

Regarding dj110965 performance with a similar displacement cruiser motorcycle is interesting

I'm surprised you got the tire to break lose too. Mine hasn't done that yet.

I was, too. I imagine you have to pop the clutch pretty hard. Had the tires grabbed, the engine probably would've bogged horribly.

You are comparing apples to oranges. People who buy a performance cruiser want the style of a cruiser with a bit more oomph ! If they want an all out power monster then they would buy a sport bike.

My thought process exactly. I've launched the M a ton of times very aggresively, and I've never had the rear wheel break loose and get sideways.

Perhaps its time to replace that back tire? SOunds like it doesn't have much grip. (Or, you dumped the clutch at 4k, which is a no-no)

I've gone out riding a few times with my buddies. One of them has a Shadow Spirit with intake/pipe/Carb mods, and my other buddy has 06 Harley w/ an 88CI...I'll keep up with my buddies Harley, and when really getting on it i am definitely out-performing the Honda, and i am still 100% stock right now.....But again, its a cruiser....Just nice to know its there though =]

Default Rear Tire Breaking Loose

Nope, rear tire in excellent condition. About 3500 miles. I was in disbelief also. I would think when I looked back at my uncle my eyes were as big as saucers. (NOTE: when I looked back) I didn't hold the front brake, just torqued it up and let her go. The road wasn't wet either.

Not mention modern power cruisers handle and brake better than a Vmax could every hope to.

The M109 is in a class on it's own. For a bike with that size and weight, it handles like the M50 but has tons of torque that you would have to feel to believe.
