Default Hole in the air box?

Just curious to see if anyone has thought about drilling a hole in the stock air box to get more air to the air filter/ throttle body? I believe this would help the bike increase some power? what are your thoughts?

If you do a search I think you'll find someone did something to modify the stock air box.

IIRC, there was a thread quite a few months back about modifying the stock airbox.

yep,
have done that, and debaffled, and TFI fuel processor added.

NOt sure about extra power - only a dyno would tell you that.

I have cut a strip out of the underside of the air box cover about 15 mm wide, and 80 mm long (I guess).

It runs nicely, pulls from very low revs, and is not jerky on partial throttle like the stock setup.

I drilled a big 1" hole right in the front. It doesnt really make that much of a difference except on the highway doing 75mph. Seems to feel a little more "relaxed" at the higher speeds.

Ripped out my baffels and drilled the cats, no lean problems yet.

when you take the big honker mufflers off at the 'H' like you would to de-baffle them, get a really long drill bit and a small crow bar or tire iron. Its a very weird metal/ceramic material that is very easy to drill through and hammer out with the crow bar.

I too cut a hole in my airbox. It is 1in. diameter at the front end and 1/2in diameter at the back end, with a 3 in distance between centers. I put it on the bottom of the airbox, rather than the front to prevent water from entering the box.

Sorry about the dirty bike, I have been busy, and not able to wash it.

Do you have any specific instructions on doing this? I have de-baffled the pipes at the rear but would be interested in this too.

I drew it out on paper and taped it on to the airbox. I then used a Dremel with a high speed cutting bit, to rough out the round sections, a sanding but to smooth it out. I then used a fiberglass reinforced cutting wheel for the straight sections. I then trimmed off the melted bits with a razorblade.

yeah but can anyone say with certainty that this signifcantly effects performance of the bike for the better?

I am waiting to do this until I see some convincing testimonials. So far people seem to be just speculating that it might make the bike run better.

What's the bottom line?

More air = more power. It's just how engines are.

However, you must make sure you have a fuel solution when you do it. (Power Commander, Cobra, Techlusion)

Your gains will be good enough to futz with the stock airbox for free, rather than spending $300 for a trick looking air intake that will do the same thing.

Thanks for that. I have no plan to get a fuel controller, so I think I'll leave the airbox alone.

You could always troll your local dealers to find a competent one that knows how to do a Yoshimura reflash for $75.00.

I did it without a fuel processor and it runs great. I've purchased a Cobra fi2000r, but dont have it installed yet.... Im hoping that will make it even better.

Yes? Did you get more power by openign the air box up without any change to the fuel controller? Please describe.
