Default First bike, need advice on service

Hi All,

My M50 is my first bike and I want to be sure I am maintaining it properly. I know the manual covers what you should do for each service and I'm good with that. I'm more curious about the wear and tear type items.

Tires - how do you know when it is time to replace them and how many miles should you expect from them. I get 50+ miles per gallon, so I assume that means I am a fairly conservative rider. I know there are wear bars on the tires, but I'm having problems finding them and I didn't see this covered in the manual (besides mm of acceptable tread). I have 5,500 miles on the bike, so I want to make sure I'm not near the end of the tire life. I ride rain or shine, so I want to be sure I'm riding a safe tire.

Brakes - How many miles can I expect from the front and rear. I assume the rear hardly ever needs to replaced being a drum. For the fronts, when they get to the end of pad life do they start to squeal like a cars? What should I be looking for?

Are their any other things I should be looking at regularly for maintenance that aren't covered in the manual?

Service manual or book - Does anyone recommend a good book for someone who wants to learn and do their own maintenece or is the factory service manual the best thing?

Thanks for your help!

Matt
