Default Debaffle question...

Hey guys. I'm gonna debaffle probably tomorrow, I was just wondering...by the time I buy a decent drill and the hole saws needed I'd have spent....well, too much for me right now. (I'm an A1C ) HOWEVER, my shop at work has a real mean drill I could use, but no hole saws. The question is: Could I just take the drill and using a large drill bit drill holes right next to each other all the way around? It would take alot longer but I guess it could be done, what do you guys think? Just keep taking bites out until I've made it around, then do it again around the baffle, then wiggle the baffle around till it comes out.

It would be very very difficult that way, because with the hole saws you are cutting out 2 welds and the smaller saw keeps things lined up (the outside weld actually welds 3 pieces together; the back plate of the baffle, inner and outer walls of the muffler. the hole saw technique allows you to cut out the back plate cleanly. Try just drilling holes in the plate for more sound rather than de-baffling til you can afford the tools. Just do a search on "drilling pipes" for lots of info already discussed in other theads.

yeah that was my main concern was not having that guide. That would suck to be drilling then suddenly have the drill come up out of the top of the pipe lol. I'm thinking about just buying the hole saws and taking them to the shop with me. Cheapest way out I think.

oh cool! Thanx, in theory it would work, it would just take more time and take some cleaning up. Thanx for the confirmation. I knew someone else HAd to have tried it lol. Anything to save money, heh.

Ok, tonight I drilled eight holes in the plate around the baffle and it sounds ALOT better, but I was short on time so Monday night i'll drill some more until the baffles are outta there!

I bought the hole-saws yesterday and tried to de-baffle but kept running into problems.

First off my arbor wouldn't hold the two hole-saws together so I tried drilling out the inside first but I am affraid my drill might not be strong enough. I was using a 18V Cordless Black & Decker.

Any suggestions other than buyinng a better drill and a different arbor? Also, where can you get an arbor that will hold two together?

I heard Lowes has the arbors, however I don't know for sure because I used stuff from my shop at work but they only had wood cutting hole saws. I ended up just drilling holes for now.

OK, so I just drilled 8 holes in each of my pipes and then was able to get the inside ring cut out but I am still having trouble with the outside weld since the arbor won't hold the two together securely. I actually bought my tools at lowes but I think I need to find an arbor that will work to finish the job. Anyone else know where to find a better arbor?

BTW, the holes made a good difference but I still want more. I can't stand riding around in Houston with all the idiots on the road when no one can hear you.

Hmmm, how big are the holes? Pretty good size? If they're big enough yu can just do what I'm going to do monday night, drill in between the holes which will finnish cutting it out, then the baffle will have anough room to move around.

The holes are only 1/4" That was the biggest drill bit I had on hand.

It would take alot more holes to manage that which I guess is not out of the question if I can't get this figured out.

How big are your holes? Let me know how it works out.

I got the arbor and hole saws (Bi-Metal) @ Home Depot for about $35.00-If any one interested I will probably be buying different pipes soon and will be looking to sell my debaffled pipes/mufflers- PM me if interested and when I sell I'll contact you on first come/first serve basis.

I used a drill I got at a pawn shop that I wouldn't mind burning up-almost did too.

Oh, well the cordless drill I already had and I think I can get it to work or borrow someone elses. I was just referring to the hole-saws.

Luckily now that I put it on the right setting the drill did pretty decent and is holding up well. I just hope it will continue when I try the 3" hole.

I used an 18v cordless drill when I debaffled my C50, it worked just fine.

That depends: Are you a king of the Mickey Mouse jury rig? If so, proceed, but do not eliminate the part of the weld that holds in the liner. If you cannot fix anything with duct tape, wait for the hole saw.

I did the debaffle with a crappy hole saw from Home Depot I got for $15 and then returned it all burned up. They did not say a thing. I felt bad. Well not really. The bike sounds great. Have fun.

Ok I didn't read all the posts, but I didn't have a spindle thing with long enough threads to attach both holesaws at once, so I did one pipe one way, and one the other. The first pipe I did using the smaller holesaw first, and then the larger one using a section of the dowel attached to the drill bit and pushed through the opening as a guide. That way was a %%%%%. The second pipe I did the opposite way, cutting the larger holesaw first (this time with a fully charged battery...) and then the smaller one, and it took maybe 30 minutes to have it cut out and dremeled and finished so it looked good. You can do it with a drill bit...but seriously, how much does it cost to buy a hole saw and attach it to your drill?? $20?

OK, so I just tried your trick with the large hole saw with the dowel (since I already have the inside cut out)and it started to work but unfortunately I burned up my drill. Now I will have to borrow a better drill to finish the job.

When i debaffled i had a hard time threading the small saw onto the arbor. What I found is that there is a small rubber gasket for the arbor on the outside of the large saw that has to be removed. This will allow the arbor threads to go all the way through the large one with plenty of material for the small one to grab on to.

If that makes any sense......
