Default Traveling to Rome, Italy

My wife and I are traveling to Rome, Italy on April 11 for 15 days. Does anyone know if you can rent a motorcycle over there? I think it would be nice to take a ride up to the wine county on 2 wheels instead of a train. Thanks in advance for any information.

Sounds like fun. Not sure if you need an international licence. Inspiron would be the one to ask or check out these guys.

You'll need an international permit, which you can get from AAA, but unless you've driven in Italy before, you might want to reconsider riding. In cities especially, the Italians seem to drive with a reckless abandon that, while exciting, can be more than a little dangerous. That is jusy my opinion, after spending some time in Vicenza and Florence.

Thanks for th info. I will check out the traffic issues after I get there and see if it's worth the hassle.

We were in Italy last year.
We hired a maserati convertible to tour tuscany, rome, florence etc.

Personally, I would get a Ducati over there, and ride the wheels off it.
My wife wouldn't agree at all.

So we got a car - and after spending some time in the traffic, touring is fine, but cities are a bit daunting!

Maserati vey nice. I have not driven one of them. I know my wife would prefer 4 wheels over the Ducati. I guess I might as well start begging now.

cars are cheap to hire, but insurance is HIGH!

There are speed limits on the Autostrada, but no one takes any notice.
it takes a while to get used to passing police cars at double (or triple) the speed limit.

Hi, i'm writing from italy...

hiring a bike here is quite difficult...and expensive. It's easyer to find a scooter than a real bike. Anyway u can ask for some info to Harley Davidson in Rome...probably is the best way to get a bike for hire.
Someone said that italian way of driving is quite dangerous....it's sad but true (especially in Rome or Milan, road is often a battlefield)...
If i can, i will suggest a car instead of a "two wheels"...for your safety.

Right....
u can see big trucks driving at 120 Kmh (limit for trucks is 90) and cars at 200Kmh (limit is 130)...be CAREFUL!!!
Even Police is dangerous...they always drive as they have to win a GrandPrix...

blackmagic666,
Thanks for the info. I thought about it over the weekend and we will either take the train or hire/rent a car. I will take one last ride on my bike Wednesday before heading to the airport later in the afternoon.

blackmagic666,
My wife and I had the best time. Rome was unreal. I would get on a plane and go back today. You were correct on the weather, PERFECT. You were also correct on the way people drive, CRAZY. I got scared just crossing the street.

But isn't it marvelous!

I had the opportunity to drive a fiat rally car up one of the mountain roads on a closed circuit event.

Different take on the scenery then!.

We liked it so much, we bought a share in a house in Tuscany, and plan on spending a year there, use it as a base, and just see Europe, one week at a time.

Was a 5 yr plan - 3.5 yrs left! to execute.
