AR, the pipes look great. Mucho impressed, and all the info is sensational. WTF are Formula1 on about with the O2 sensor? Just those comments alone are enough to make me think I should be staying clear of them. Sounds like you're well pleased with the Staintunes, and good work on the price, too. I'm mindful of the potential for discolouration on the stainless and I guess you just have to keep 'em clean.

BTW, screen really suits. I agree the OEM product is pricey, but you've gotta be happy with the result. Thought those mirrors came from somewhere else! Bloody nice job.

djump is very happy with his screen brought in from the US. I can't remember the details. He'll tell you about it.

Thanks again AR. Like I said, you've got me thinking about some new pipes, anyone what some Jardine's?

MrC I've got myself a Menphis shades wildcat and it's very similar but half the price. Great quality as well

Cheers

AR, can you post a couple of pic's straight side on to the bike so I can check out the lines of the pipes. Also a close up of the exit (trying to figure out how open they are) and connection points/balancing tube would be great.

Thanks again

djump. It's late at night so I'm not sure how these will work out.

The diameter of the pipes at exit is 40mm. You can not see the joins where the silencers butt on to the headers, as there is an inner pipe in each muffler that goes over the header pipe and sealed by high temp silicone gasket cement. No clamps to spoil the look. The ss larger diameter pipe you can see at the joins is actually an outer polished pipe the same diameter as the chrome stock heat cover so that they flow into each other smoothly. The ss balance tube is welded to (and part of) the lower muffler and joined to a stock stub on the top header pipe by a clamp you see the bolt head of in one of the pics. This clamp is quite well hidden from view and is the only clamp on the system. I had to remove the back header to join the balance tubes and mufflers to headers. A bit of a fiddle but pretty easy. The instructions are clear that come with the kit.

It's a bit hard to explain all this and what to me is an acceptable noise level. What's ok for me may be too quiet for others, but i can assure you they are quite a bit louder than stock. A sound expert will tell you that an increase of 7 dB at 3000 rpm is quite significant, and a rip on the throttle gives it a good bark without blowing your ears off.

PS Wish i had wiped the dust off the thing before taking the pics. We had a storm the night before, and dirt was blowing everywhere, even got under the cover. Damn black bikes!

Many thanks AR. They do look quality with nice welds.

As for the sound, I've only heard good things from and about Staintune. My Jardines where just to loud for my everyday riding. Great out on the open road but I was amost scared to open 'er up in between to city buildings. Someone else messured the stock Jardines at 104dB which is 100 times the sound energy which is legal in Australia (94dB). I'm much happier with the sound now that I have my baffles modified but I think I will get more torque and hP from your system combined with my intake mods.

Thanks again

My camera's stuffed so I can't post any pics, but I've just had the Staintunes fitted to my M50. They look and sound great - plenty loud enough for me. I'll probably be investing in some earplugs as it is.

One slight problem is that the bottom pipe is not a clean fit to the stock pipe - there's a gap of about 5mm between the two. The Staintunes look like they're adjusted as far forward as they'll go, so it looks like I'm stuck with the gap. A stainless strap will hide it, and it's not overly noticeable in the whole scheme of things, just not perfect.

Overall, I'm really pleased with the result though, and looking forward to giving it a squirt over the weekend.

Chicken. I've had the Staintunes on for quite a while now. That gap is standard, ignore it, you won't notice it after a few weeks. Remember the old Hindu saying "If you don't like it - don't look at it". My pipes have been great, so much lighter than stock, nice sound and I reckon they look terrific. The only thing I haven't liked was the yellowing that comes with stainless steel after a few hundred kms of exhaust heat. It can be polished out, but I got sick of that and had them chrome plated. Cost me $80 a muffler, but hey, do they look fantastic! No more yellowing, so a prefect match to the header pipes, and if ever you get a small ding in them - no chance of rusting due to the stainless steel underneath. You will notice an improvement in low and mid-range torque and lower fuel consumption.

Yeah, mine have started to discolour after just a couple of days riding. I knew it would happen, just didn't think it would happen so quickly. Good idea getting them chromed. I'll see how I go for a while with the polish ...

Chicken. Message me if you go for the chroming. A lot of electro platers won,t want to do it for reasons I'll explain. It can be done easily, but if you go that way don't leave it too long.

Thanks AR - will do. I'm not real sharp when it comes to this stuff. Are the Staintunes just a polished stainless from the factory and not already chromed?

I bought a good quality stainless hose clamp from my local marine chandlery and bridged the small gap between the Staintunes and the stockies. It's a cleaner finish, though I suspect no one's going to notice it one way or the other (me included).

I'm loving the burble from these pipes, particularly when you tap the throttle coming down through the gears - not so loud that it blows your ears off but still plenty loud enough for people to know you're there. I agree there's an improvement in low to mid-range torque, and I'm finding the power-on much smoother. AR, thanks for all your comments and photos - they've nudged me nicely in the right direction.

I.
No chrome, just highly polished stainless steel. SS turns a sort of golden colour when exposed to high temperatures like exhaust stytems. It's only on the surface. Not an issue usually with sports bikes as their muffflers are placed right to the rear of the bike and don't get as hot as ours, which (especially the rear cylinder) only have a relatively short header pipe. Some guys like the gold effect that happens, but it doesn't suit cruisers IMO.
