| Hi there.. I'm glad I finally found a forum. I bought my new '06 M50 in early September and since then I haven't found any forums with good information, so I'm glad to be here! I started riding earlier this year when I bought a friend's sport bike off of him as a first bike (Yamaha FZR-600R). It was a lot of fun but I enjoyed just cruising around more than riding fast like my younger friends (I'm 31), and I hated being uncomfortable so I decided a cruiser would be better for me. I spoke with a lot of experienced riders and they all had good things to say about the V-Stars and Boulevards. I specifically liked the speedo mounted on the handlebars look though and I think the M50 was the only bike with that feature, out of all the new cruisers I looked at. Once I sat on it I knew that it was the bike for me. My dealership takes all new M50's that they get in and lower them and put Cobra pipes on them. So my bike has these mods already installed, I was pretty happy with that. I think price out the door was $7500 which I thought was pretty good for a small town dealership. I was on the fence about having them do the first maintnance or doing it myself. I've seen various prices here but my dealership was going to charge $270, so after reading all of the information here I decided to change the oil and gear lube myself today thanks to Zuke Dude's Tune-Up post. The only complaints I have so far is that the seat is uncomfortable (seems to be a common complaint), and I NEED a windshield (since we ride without helmets here in Ohio). Other than that I'm very happy with my purchase and I'm glad to have found this place and I hope to make a good addition to this community. -Justin Last edited by JustinOhio; 10-04-2006 at 07:46 PM. |

| Welcome Justin ...good choice on the M50. What color did you get? p.s. I dont think a windshield will save your skull if you crash. probably be cheaper to buy a helmet than a windshield

| Welcome Justin, congrats on your M50! I also enjoy the many great posts on this site. I have no complaints on the seat of my M50, but I change seating positions frequently while riding. We are fortunate enough to have a no-helmet required in Colorado, but I almost always wear one. Occasionally I'll scoot around the neighborhood without one to listen to the engine or diagnose a noise, so I like that I'm not violating a helmet law to do that. However, too many times I'm so very glad I had a helmet on, small rocks and big bugs sure do make an impact. Have you taken the MSF course? Ride safe |

| I haven't taken the MSF course but I did receive instruction from the owner of my local dealership. He offers a course you can take to use their modified scooter to take your license test and during that time he gives a lot of information. I was going to try to take the local MSF but they were filled up. Then sadly a couple months ago the guy that teaches the MSF course was killed in a motorcycle accident. It was the usual idiot pulling out in front of him that did it.

| The best investment for a new rider is MSF, the second is a good helmet. We would like you to stick around and share this passsion with us, so give thought to these 2 items. Enjoy and ride safe. |

| Welcome Justin - being a newbie myself...I guess I'll get my first post in by saying Hey. I'm assuming you're in Ohio. I'm a buckeye myself. Just south of Youngstown in the Columbiana area. I didn't see your locale in your profile. BTW- I think the wind in your hair thing is way over-rated compared to the alternatives.

| Where in Ohio are you? I would remind you to check your license to see if it says "NOVICE" near the motorcycle endorsement. In Ohio, you have to have that on your license the first year, which means that you have to wear a helmet(and your passengers do as well). Only reason I know is that this week ends my first year of riding.

| Welcome. I hope you're not a buckeye fan, they are all pure concentrated evil. Actually, buckeye fans aren't bad. Now if you rooted for notre dame or the sooners, that would be a diffent story. Anyway, i just put on a windshield myself. Might i recommend the Memphis Shades Hellcat or Alleycat. They're the same except for the mounting points. I think it doesn't take too much away from the look of the bike. There are pictures around here if you search for them.

| Welcome and enjoy your new bike. If you use a good half helmet, you still enjoy everything that motorcycling offers whithout sacrificing your head. I don't even notice it on when riding. This would be minimum protection you should have.

| Welcome to the forums. I live in Illinos, where helmets are optional. I grew up in Michigan, where they are not. For me, riding without a helmet takes the enjoyment out of riding. Wind in your face at 30mph is fine, but at 65-75 mph, it makes the ride almost unbearable for me. Hurts my ears, and makes my eyes water. I tried it once to see what all the fuss was about. I love tme helmet I have. Can listen to my mp3 player, and just enjoy the ride.' At any rate, please be careful. Many cars out there believe they own the roads. |

| Welcome from another Buckeye. Transplanted from Mansfield, graduate from Univ of Toledo. Oh, and BLyder - that's the best looking avitar I have seen on this site, I believe. Pay no mind to Gar4mayor, it's gotta be tough living in Austin after Sept 2nd. Please go for a quality, DOT approved helmet and get into an MSF class soon. I would highly recommend both.

| Personaly I wouldn't ride without a helmet but is it our business to lecture new members about wearing a helmet?. Riding a bike is risky period, but do you want to be lectured about that by everyone you meet ? I get sick of hearing about how dangerous bikes are from non riders and I would imagine that adults who choose to ride without helmets feel the same way about being lectured about their choice as well. BTW.

I have a dot beanie helmet and a turtle shell non dot helmet. I was wearing my non dot helmet in my recent accident. My head never hit anything. Now if I were to have been wearing my dot helmet, I bet for the irony of it, my head would have smacked every thing it could have in that 40 foot slide. Maybe back to the subject at hand? Welcome, I wish I could legally ride without a helmet. At least once in a while. | |
