Default K&N Filter Mod for M50

This mod uses a K&N R1390 filter, about $35 + shipping. I hacked out the old element. I took a razor knife to it and used snips on the metal perforated innerds. The intake hole is about 2". I got a 1.5" No Hub Coupler form the plumbing dept @ Home Depot for about $2 . It has a 2" rubber coupling inside it. I discarded the outer clamp and the rubber fit the hole perfectly. I then cut it down to about 1.5" long and fit it in the intake hole and used Black RTV gasket maker to seal it up. I let it cure overnight. The K&N filter flange fits perfecty around the rubber and it has a metal screw type clamp to secure it. It is rubber to rubber contact so you don't have to put the kabotch to it, just tight enough will do. I had already modified the stock airbox, cutting out about a 8" X 1.5" section from the bottom of the plastichrome cover. I then epoxied a sheet of sanding screen inside to help keep out flying critters and such. I also pulled out the rubber elbow and plugged up the original intake hole with gaffers tape. I have a Techlusion TFi installed and my pipes are gutted stock (no restrictors). This bike now rides like a beast compared to stock. It pulls a lot harder now and I think it is probably doing 0 to 60 in under 5 sec. now. LOVE it!!!!

Breeze,

Nice one.. can you tell me what the K&N air filter is supposed to fit?? I tried searching for that part number but comes back with some weird stuff.

Definatly one I want to try.. any more information you can give on the air filter itself would be great.

I found it on the site under Universal filters. I was basically looking for one that was similar in dimensions to the stock element. It came with an instruction sheet for a Yamaha YZ 80. Go figure! I realize that the M50 has 10 X's the displacement of a YZ80, but this filter let's so much more air in than the stock element. You may be able to fit a slightly larger one in there, but it will be tight. I am real happy with the performance.

No that one is too tall. The R-1390 that I got is for a 1982 YZ80. Here are some links to the K&N site:
K&N High Performance Air Filters, Oil Filters, & Cold Air Intakes - Official K&N Engineering Site
K&N Universal Clamp-on Air Filters for a Variety of Universal Air Filter Applications

This one may work also:

You can buy direct from K&N but I don't know how high shipping would be to the UK.
