Default In the market for a new bike

Hey folks,
I am a new rider, currently the owner of a 250 Nighthawk, been watching these forums for a few weeks (trolling?). I am looking to purchase a bike in a few months and I am leaning heavily towards the M50. Until yesterday, I had never actually seen the bike in person. My local dealer finally got one in though, and I liked it even more in person. But instead of making it an easy decision, my dealer complicated matters by introducing me to the Hyosung GV650. I spent all day yesterday checking out the little bit of information there is about this Korean bike, and I am torn now. I know that this is probably not the best place to get an unbiased opinion, but I would really value a weigh-in from you folks.

Thanks

I traded my 06 Vulcan 750 for an 06 M50 and I'm glad I did, it's a great bike, very stable and comfortable, I would highly recommend it!

If you buy the Korean bike overtime I believe you will wish you bought the M. 800cc is just right for handling all types of traffice issues when HP is needed. I see this bike as underpowered and this could be an issue. Just my two yen.

Even thou its only a 650cc it has more HP than the M50. 67HP and 20lbs lighter

heres my 2 wan pappasan. go for the M. too bad you can't get a red one. they are the fastest of all M's produced. that korean job probably runs on soju though. i know that is cheaper than gas although it's probably harder to get here in the states.....

This is what it comes down to for me. Both of the bikes look awesome IMO, and what I would really like is a bike that is going to be a thrill to ride as well as look good. I have heard two different stories about the M50, it's either pokey or a rocket. One site has it's quarter mile time at 15.5 and another shows 14. I also am not quite sure about the benefits of torque versus horsepower. Also belt drive versus shaft.

P.S. I gotta say, black looked pretty damn fast at the dealer.

Nice looking bike but not my style, to much crome and looks like a V-Rod. I am not a fan of V-Rods either.

In cycle world tests the M ran a 14.29@ 88mph, bone stock. I have done some investigation into the Hyosung myself, and I saw an article that claimed 20 some odd lb ft of torque and 71 hp. According to cycle world, the M is 45 hp and 44 lbft of torque. So, coming off the stoplight the M will feel gutsier, but the Hyosung has quite a pull on top end. In the end, the GV may run a little quicker through the quarter (.5 seconds at most) but the M will be better all around. If your gonna be running the snot out of it constantly you may like the top end of the GV. I personally like the look of the M better, but thats up to you. Just fyi, Hyosung has been building bikes for years (est. 1978, started making parts for suzuki in 1979), some that were rebadged as suzuki's in other markets. Thier 650 v-twin is basically a copy of the Suzuki SV650 v-twin, but carbureted. The overall quality of the bikes is supposedly pretty darn good, with an outstanding factory warranty (two years I believe). Plus it's got good cornering clearance, dual front/single rear disc brakes, a factory 2:1 exhaust, dealer optional performance muffler (which I hear improves torque a little at low revs), and some other accessories. It also seems that the company has a huge financial backing that has already put in place a fine network of warehouses to house parts, so that even though it's a new bike, parts availability won't be a problem. Plus, msrp is $6199. I'm actually interested in thier half faired sport bike, the GT650S. 79hp for $5399, and it's gorgeous. Check out Hyosung Motors America .

p.s. I still love my M, but if you want a sport flair to your bike I would definetly consider the GV.

As a new rider, I wouldn't be as concerned about the quarter mile times. I'd be more concerned at how well the bike & I fit...both from a riding ability perspective as well as overall comfort. Just my 2 cents.

I tried to convince the wife to get the Hyosung if she was ever looking to upgrade her bike. That's so I can ride it too.

What? As if you guys never did it.

Yeah, I don't even push my 250 all that hard. I am interested in the quarter times more as an indication of the character of the bike. I would really like to be able to get out and enjoy some mountain runs (I'm in upstate SC).
Thanks for all the info, I can't seem to find a dealer that does test rides, so all I have to go on is what I hear.

I would suggest you get the Hyosung so you can tell us about it. It would be nice to hear something different because all you hear around here is "M50 this, M50 that, our bike is sooo cool, blah blah blah"

But seriously though IMO you can't go wrong with the M, but if you decide to get the Hyosung make sure it's BLACK.

It's Faster.

I would make a straight comparison of the two. Ride each one if you can. If can't, at least sit on both a few times. How it feels will be the most important thing. Maybe you can get in touch with someone in your area that owns an M50. Have them go see the Korean bike with you and bring the M along. You can't go wrong seeing the two them side by side!

Oh yeah, and black is the only way to go...of course!

The M is a sweet machine. I can't say anything bout the Hyosung, but it seems to be kickin. It claims to have more HP than the M50, but who knows. I've found the M to be very tame at low speeds with a ton of power to get ya moving.

For anyone who's complaining about it being Korean, check out your Ford - a very large percentage of American cars are made of parts built in the Asian countries.
