Default I cant get the ISO grips on my bike.. help!

I couldn't even get past step 1 on this thing. The 2 philips scres that hold the controls on the handlebar are SO stuck on there its like they are welded. I used 3 different sized philips screw driver handles to get more torque to get them out and instead the one screw is completely stripped. The bottom one is still ok but I figured I should stop before doing anymore damage. I dont know why they are so tight, how did every one else get them off? What can I do about getting out screws that are stripped?

Mine where super tight too, I had someone brace the bike for me so I could put some weight behind the big ass screw driver I had to use. On the one that is stripped now you may have to drill it out, then you could slide off the end piece and that should leave you with a 1.5 inch piece of bolt sticking out of your handle bar. Then I would just grab that with some vice grips and pull it out. With any luck you will get the bolt and rubber piece from inside the bar when you do that. As far as getting the grips off if you have compressed air stick the sir under the grip and blow it up like a balloon if not I rolled it back and once I got it started I put dish soap on the rest so it would slide over it's self. OK once you have the grips off and you clean off the old glue the clutch side is cake to do (ALWAYA MAKE SURE YOU TEST FIT THEM FIRST) from this piont the directions should get you thought but the gas side SUCKS!!! atleast it did for me you have to grind off all the ridges on the throttle sleeve so that the new grip will fit and once you have done that and TEST fitted it you apply glue and hope for the best. When I did mine the glue dried instantly, bad thing was it was only half on :/ so i ripped it off reglued some of it lined it up so it would go on the way i wanted it to and then i pushed it on as fast as i could. I hope to god that someone else helps you out with this cause I had a hell of a time.... Godd luck to ya, hope i helped some.

Spray them with some WD-40 and let it soak for awhile. If that don't work , you might have to drill them out.

I dont have any type of drill set or anything since we moved out.. how do you drill a screw and get it out? Where do I get a replacement screw?

you drill through the center of the screw and that renders it ineffective so you can pull it out. you won't need a replacement screw because the ISOs don't use that kind of setup. you don't have to worry about wrecking any of the stock parts. now borrow a drill from a neighbor and go be a neanderthal man!

Hey Ricochet,

I'm at home. Call me and I can help if you like.

Also, I'm not sure if everyone is talking about the same thing. I don't think he's having trouble with the weights on the end of the bars. It sounds like he can't get the cover over the kill switch apart. I think it's those screws that are the problem.

Is that right, or are you having trouble with the end weights?

Anyway, call if you like and ride over and we can get it done if you like.

Andre

Rico, which screw are you talking about? The one at the end of the handlebar or the one that holds the switch housing? The one that holds the switch housing you should be able to take the one that is still good to any hardware store for a match.

Hey Everybody! SERIOUSLY AndeMan to save the day!

I would'nt of been able to get these grips on with out Andre. He was kind enough to allow me to his home, and use his power tools. Get this, the screw that was holding the controls on were SO tight in there, it destroyed one of his drill bits, destroyed 2 anti-strip bits and we eventually had to actually drill the bastard out.. but we got it, and now everything is on and it looks great! But now I need to get a replacement screw for the one that I destroyed..

Thanks again Andre!

Kudo's to Andeman! That's what I love about this forum, people helpin' people.

I wonder if they didn't use that dam red locktite RicoCHet? I literally had to destroy my stock airbox to get it off.......the monkey's at the dealership were nice enough to smother the screw's in the stuff for me.

Striped out three different bolts during the teardown process last week. ALl had blue locktite all the way up the bolt. Now way any bolts on my bike were ever gonna fall off. Should have called her bombproof

I got to say that with leather gloves on, it feels great! it just feels a lot more beefy in my hands. As AndreMan said, it does increase vibration a little so im not sure if i will get annoyed with that.. but generally it seems pretty great! I can compare it to the extra thick steering wheel my car has versus some older cars with thin steering wheels. just feels MUCH better in the hand! :

It definitely does increase vibration, but once your cruising it seems fine. I was just telling my brother it feels interesting because you can tell exactly your RPMS through your fingers and palm of your hands and that feels great

I have the ISO grips and didn't notice an increase in vibration. I am very happy with them.

Mine installed in a snap, no additional vibration (until the De-baffled Jardines)

I especially like the grooves for me fingertips
