Thumbs up Pirelli Route 66 Tires

Well I bought a pair and got them in Friday morning. If you saw my other thread you realize that I had to mount these myself since the local shops are taking the "didn't buy it here, won't mount it" approach.

I got the Stock IRC's off (14,112 miles) with a helper and got the new Pirelli's added.

I must say that the front wheel on the M50 is one of the most balanced wheels I've every seen. Maybe that's why they didn't have weights with the stock tires.

Got the tires mounted and the beads sealed extremely easy on these tires. Aired them the rest of the way up to 42lbs as the tire states.

Well, got about 300 miles on them and this is what I have to say:

Hell yea! These tires do a wonderful job of absorbing road bumps. The difference is night and day over stocks. They hold a line well straight up and work with any road grooves I encountered.

In the curves? High speed curves felt really good and stable, and allowed even a rough mid-corner to get lost in the rubber and not in the handlebars. I travelled into mid-missouri and took some great 25/35mph curves in the area. Needless to say, the tires griped so good that it felt natural to be leaned over as far as I was.

Definately recommend this tire for anyone looking to replace their stocks as an alternative to Metzlers.

How hard is it to take the rear tire off the bike?

Hey dragbar, did you keep the stock sizes or increase?

Geoff,

I kept the stock sizes. Actually had a few riders (kawi and a Triumph talking about how wide my rear tire was) even though it's still the 170.

Ice,

After getting her jacked up and secure....

You have to undo the brake bolt (black bar that connects to the drum cover)

Disconnect the brake rod.

On the left side, Undo the 4 bolts that hold the fake swingarm cover on (and the 1 dark Hex bolt). Slide the cover off.

Then get rid of the pin on the axle, unscrew it and pull it out.

Only took me about 10 minutes to get the wheels off. If you don't have a manual, take pictures if you have to, so you can refer if you forget a step.

Overall it took me 4 hours (with beer breaks) to get the wheels off, break the tire bead (hardest part), spoon on the new rubber, balance and reinstall. Though trust me when I say you definately need a helper unless you have some homebuilt comptraption to help with it all.

How many miles are you at when you changed the tires?

Good job on keeping control of yourself. I know you were probably entertaining thoughts of cramming in the 200

Oh and Tech, I think he said it was about 14,000, right at the start of this thread

You balanced it yourself or you took it someplace to do it for you?

that's odd..I could of swore I answered this post earlier in the night...hmmm.

Ice,

Search for Motorcycle Tire changing on the net...you'll get several responses on the DIY list. I made a quick level stand and went to town. I'd post you the exact instructions, but I'm at work and don't have all my links handy.

sry m8..cleaned out my box.

Their holding up great...I'm over 1000 and they look to be wearing well. No they don't have white lettering. I ordered mine from motorcycle-superstore and didn't see any type of option either way.

Oh and I road in a HUGE deluge the other night coming home from work. (over 2 inch in 30 minutes)....They handled the water exceptionally well.
