Been spending some quality time with the M50 lately... 600 miles in 10 hours to be specific! Rode from South Padre Island to Arlington straight through yesterday, getting in a little after midnight. Was getting up to 61 mpg. when I slowed to mid seventies after dark. Ran 58 mpg. when pushing 85. She really gets her groove on between 80-85, very smooth, sounds good & feels stable. The foot pegs became somewhat tiring on the feet around the halfway mark... May be some floorboards in the future... This was my longest run on the bike so far, and I am still being impressed with the value, performance, and engineering quality of this "do it all" 800! With about 2,600 miles on it, I pulled the rocker covers tonight and adjusted the valves. They were found to be uniformly lacking proper clearance. I set them up at 0.005 intakes, and 0.009 exhausts. Beware of dealers offering to do them for less than 200-300 bucks, because it will take at least 3 hours to do it right... It is a tedious job in a very tight space. The stock seat gives tailbone trouble by 120 miles, so several stops to top off and walk around were in order... The Mobil 1 15-50 that's been in it for 2k miles stayed right on the full mark, and the spark plugs look excellent upon inspection. All in all, she's been a good girl! |
