Default Is a tachometer useful on a M50?

I was hoping to get your advice on Tachometers. Is a tachometer useful on a M50? If so what is the best Tachometer for the money that I can put on my bike (easy to do it your self)?

Thank you and safe riding,

Whether a tachometer is useful or not is up to the indivudual. Personally I couldnt live without one, so I bought a baron's bullet black face and mounted right next to the speedo. I had the dealer install it when I had the first service done ...they did it for $50.

I agree, just depends on the person... I havent put one on yet, mostly cause I am a lazy bastard... Once I get time, and the proper motivation I am definatly doing it!

For those WITH a tach. Where is the red line? Or how many rpms before a rev limiter kicks in?

Thanks

bluem50....can you give me a pic of what your baron tach looks like? I'm very interested in getting a tach...but want to keep my "clean" look to the M. Thanks!

Hello bluem50,
Does your baron's bullet bounce any? Is there any way that you could post an image of your tach on you bike? I would like to have a tach but, I am not sure how accurate it would be or how it would look.

Thanks bluem50 and safe riding,
Blue Max

Hello soundcolor99,
Please let me know if you have any bounce in the tach needle. Also, do you have any idea what the stock motors red line should be?(sorry I can't find what the rev limiter or the red line are set at in the manual)

Thanks soundcolor99 and safe riding,
Blue Max

I don't know about the M50 but I'm thinking about putting one on my Volusia. It seems like I'm always trying to get another gear because it sounds like it is revving too high in 5th gear. lI guess it's not too bad because I get 50 mpg, but it just sounds like I need another gear.

I would like a tach, and eventually likely will. One things for sure though so far, now that I've gotten the break in done I'm finding that it really likes to run in the higher rpms when running through the gears. I went riding with a buddy that has a zx14 last weekend and really opened my m50 up more than I'd previously done. At one point I found myself shifting into third at nearly 45 mph. I was truly impressed, never did hit the rev limiter though in the back of my mind I'm still curious just how many rpms I was hitting.

What exactly happens when you hit the rev limiter ? Does the engine cut out or what ?

I hit the rev limiter on a Taurus on "the world's loneliest highway" in NV. It just sort of stutters & won't go any faster. It doesn't cut out & leave you powerless. If you ease off the gas you are back to normal running again.

Anyone who's ridden a given bike more than a few miles knows it's sound and feel. I only look at my tach when I'm cruising a highway and I'm curious - never for shifting. That's second nature based on power output and sound.

I don't plan to get one. No need for it. The bike tells me all I need to know.

I agree, but I can see more of a point having one on your bike than all the cars with auto tranny's having one, what's the point of that?
I have no desire or need for one.

You're right, that's pointless. I think it's a sales gimmick. Makes it seem more high-performance to have two needles sweeping up.

The rev limiter kicks in well after the power drops off, so in my opinion, the only reason for a tach on an M50 is asthetics. I ran the crud out of mine and never wished I had a tach. I'd just shift when I knew it was time. It would be kinda cool if you could find one that looked nice, just as a custom touch. I think a tach in place of the speedometer would be cool, maybe with a little digital screen at the bottom that had a readout for your speed.

I see no point with the m50 it’s not high performance bike. Like stated above the bike will tell you what gear it needs to be in.

I have a Tach in my Toyota...and I have no use it.

Having one on my M50 would be just as useless to me...my M already tells me when I need to shift, I don't need to read it too.

I think I'd rather have a fuel guage.
