| Gday all, First problem with my M50, the rear diff is leaking. Pretty bad too, oil on the rear tyre will not be fun,,, I showed my dealer and they contacted Suzuki who wanted to know if the diff was overfilled at first service but it was all done correctly. The bike has 2000km on it, so its a new seal being fitted on Monday under warrenty. I have not seen a thread on this subject so maybe i am the first???? Ohh well **** happens Toolboy |

| Gulp! I hope this doesn't turn up as a commom problem. To the best of my knowledge the rear drive is an older design from Volusia days (correct me if I'm wrong) so it has been tried and tested for a while. Keep us informed. Maybe some of that NT sand & dust got in to it. (LOL)

| I don't know how you could over fill the differential. I was told to fill it up till it comes to the top of the filler hole, you can't get any fuller than that !

| Well that is first thing that Suzuki asks, the drip has become a steady flow now so the bike is in the shed till Monday. I eat enough of the NT sand an dust when racing motocross up here Aussierider so it would sure wear out a seal,,,lol.. Toolboy |

| Unless your bike has two rear wheels, it's not a differential. Just an FYI.

| A differential is a set of gears that accomodate two wheels on a single axle. A drive shaft is just that, a shaft. I'm not sure what you call the housing that your driveshaft resides in and contains the oil. Anyone?

| Gday all, The end result was that the Final Drive "Breather" was blocked by silastic. In the workshop manual on assembly of the Final drive a sealant is used but warns not to block the breather hole. The seal was replaced as well. Interesting Toolboy |

| What is Silastic???? Description :: Silastic 733 is a high performance, one-part silicone sealant that offers excellent adhesion (usually without a primer), elasticity, wide temperature resistant and long life reliability.

| Toolboy, thanks for this info. Where exactly is the final drive breather hole? Can it be checked for blockage without getting your hands dirty? Interesting that the USA m50s don't have that O2 sensor attached to the top OEM silencer. I wonder why!

| The breather looks like a bolt hole on the final drive case, i havent seen it on the bike but the mechanic showed in the workshop manual and under the picture is the warning about not blocking the breather with sealant. When I purchased Jardine pipes and went to fit them i realised that there was no O2 sensor hole, Australian emission controls differ from the USA. I wanted to keep the sensor after discussion with the dealer and raised the question about this issue on this forum and some fact finding about O2 sensor on the web. I had also fitted a Thunder MFg Air cleaner and Techlusion FI module so i had the sensor fitted to the system, but because there is no cross over the sensor reads only 1 pipe. It was that or leave the sensor disconnected. The M50 runs great with a little fine tunning on the Techlusion unit. Toolboy |

| My guess is that our bikes have to conform to the euro emission standards, so we have a O2 sensor fitted to the exhausts to monitor carbon monoxide levels. The alternative might have to be a catalytic converter, which all current BMWs Ducatis, Guzzis etc have fitted as standard. The US models obviously have a different requirement. Glad you raised this, I assumed that all after-market pipes would have the sensor adapter fitted for M50 options. I wondered why it had never come up in their posts. Now we know.

| I have an 06 S83 that is leaking. Oil on the wall of the tire. Brought it back and all they did was tighten the drain plug. It has to go back. I will print this out and hand it to the service techs. If the breather is clogged, is the leak coming from around the seals, and if so, should they be replaced? Thanks for any help in advance. Jim

It's leaking because if the breather hole is blocked and the pressure build up blows out the seal. If your breather hole is blocked then your seal has been damaged and should be replaced. | |

| I just noticed my gear oil is leaking too. I checked the bolts and all are tight. Just another note: My original gear oil was a light brown color. I replaced it with the oil that was recommended by the dealer and it was red. It has been about 1500 miles and the oil has turned brown again. WTF. Is this normal. Does anyone know what the Stealer would charge to fix this? |

| That's your crankcase oil. Totally normal for it to change color. The dealer will charge you whatever a normal oil change costs to "fix" it, but the pretty red color will only last 500-600 miles |
